The GOP should resign itself to the facts
Sunday, August 15, 2004
The Democrats are in chaos. The governor is resigning amid a sex scandal that gets more sordid by the day. Meanwhile, they're running the state on borrowed money and also raising taxes at a rate that leads the nation.
That brings me to the question that all thoughtful political observers in New Jersey are asking themselves: How will the Republicans screw this up?
They'll find a way, that's for sure. On Friday, for example, the GOP leadership held a news conference to demand that James E. McGreevey step down immediately so we can have a special election in November to choose a governor for the remaining year of his term. But how would that benefit the GOP?

The GOP:
"Snatching one more defeat from the jaws of victory..."
"Snatching one more defeat from the jaws of victory..."
Amended:
The GOP:
"Snatching one more defeat from the jaws of victory...one opportunity at a time" :)
Gawd they seem feckless.
Yes.
By acting like total fools, like deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming car, they are blindly calling for McGreevey to step down, so that they can have a election run off in which Corzine is certain to be unanimously selected as the Democratic standard bearer, while the GOP party bosses in Jersey select a liberal Corzine clone like Tom Kean Jr. et al. Corzine, with his greater name recogniztion as Senator, big bucks and ethnic connections will walk away with a quick win and solidify support for the next election in November of 2005 for governor.
Meanwhile the idiot liberals who run the state GOP in Jersey and are so out of touch with their own conservative constitutency that they will have assured the entrance into the statehouse of a very dangerous and most dogmatic, wealthy and shrewd far leftist ideologue.
Far better to have Codey, an unelectable gubernatorial individual, step into McGreevey's shoes and have a possible primary fight among the dems in 2005.
But intelligence has never been a N.J. State GOP strongpoint.
There's much truth in those words.
Should be required reading.

The gubernatorial race would help force an issues oriented debate between the Democrats and the Republicans. The credibility of the Democrat party in NJ is a little rickety right now thanks to McGreevey, and the stunt with postponing the date he would vacate the office only served to make the Democrats look as if they were playing fast and loose with the NJ electorate.
The Republican Party is hoping to use the damage McGreevey has caused to lead off their campaign to capture some of NJ's Democrat congressional seats. At least that makes sense to me.
Can you imagine a band of FReepers running the RNC?
We'd all see that good ol', scortched-earth-no-prisoners-gimme-all-your-lunch-money-cuz-I'm-bigger-than-you-and-don't-you-forget-it kind of politics that The Left has done for decades.
No pay, I'll just work for food.
"The gubernatorial race would help force an issues oriented debate between the Democrats and the Republicans."
I don't think the Repubs would have time to solidify support behind the kind of liberal candidate the State Party bosses are likely to select. And a debate between someone like Tom Kean Jr. and Corzine would be a pillow fight. There is very little difference between a liberal N.J. Repub and and Democrat anyway. The State GOP Party bosses would be merely stealing from the N.J. GOP rank and file, who are far more conservative, the chance of selecting a decent alternative candidate, while making it easier for the Dems to avoid a primary fight in 2005.
"The credibility of the Democrat party in NJ is a little rickety right now thanks to McGreevey,"
Their popularity was even lower in 2002, again, thanks to McGreevey, but under the present head of the State GOP, Kyrillos, the GOP blew the legislative races in that one too.
"..the stunt with postponing the date he would vacate the office only served to make the Democrats look as if they were playing fast and loose with the NJ electorate. "
I don't think so. New Jersey voters have beomce innured to politico-legal stunts like this. Look what happened with the Lautenberg - Torrecelli bait and switch which was even MORE egregious as state law was quesiotnable on the issue. Yet they voted in a half-dead cadaver over a decent man.
"The Republican Party is hoping to use the damage McGreevey has caused to lead off their campaign to capture some of NJ's Democrat congressional seats."
I think that's unlikely as long as Mr. Ineptitude, Kyrillos and his cronies are running the show there. They have a perfect track record of perfect failure.
The only alternative for the GOP would be to find themselves a candidate similar to Corzine -- a political "outsider" who is independently wealthy. The only one of note who fits that description would be Steve Forbes, and I would imagine that he has no interest whatsoever in getting involved in the New Jersey political scene.
Now cometh the Democratic leadership-suggesting Mc Greedy step down in September, so they can replace him with Jon Corzine-(US senator from NJ)in a special election.
They are apparently confident Corzine could defeat ANYONE the Republicans might choose to run.Jon is said to be getting a bit restive in the Senate-where he is just a fairly junior cog in a very big wheel. He's used to being a major MAJOR corporate CEO,and telling politicians what to do.
I think Forrester is pretty wealthy, but few human beings in the United States can come close to "Daddy Moneybacks" Corzine.
Actually, I fired of a suggestion to the Repubs that they see if they can find a conservative, qualified gay man to run on the Republican ticket. He doesn't have to agree with the Republican Party on cultural issues... But politically and economically he should agree. And since he's conservative, he isn't going to push for radical changes in NJ laws that address the gay culture. He'll be more focused on trying to fix the problems caused by the Democrat resignee.
That would give the gay community an opportunity to shout "traitor" and "turncoat" and generally expose the gay left as being a radical political group to the more moderate but liberal leaning America.
Nick Aselta, on the air now in NJ, Repub NJ state senator.
The following is a brief overview of what he is saying.
He says he does not think Mc Greedy is now lame ducka and can not serve effectively.
He asks is the republicans ready and able to run and fund an election in November?
And that right now about 10-12 republicans are ready to announce interest in running in Nov., so how do we pick one to run against the Dem.
Republicans must ask themselves can we win a short term election in Nov?
However the public outrage in NJ even in the left wing press is for him to step down now.
If he does step down this would help the Dems becasue they would have an incumbant for one year.
The dems have alot of money that they could pour into a special election in Nov., repubs (the party of the rich) doesn't have as much.
Ques. to him. does the WH and the national party want a special election?
There he sort of avoided an answer and said that the party needs to go with the will of the people. And that maybe the Iindepneants an some dems are fed up with the dme party in NJ.
NO LIE THERE! God, I'd LOVE to grind a few libtards under my combat boot.
He says he does not think Mc Greedy is now lame ducka and can not serve effectively.
CORRECTION he said he is a lame duck andcan ot serve effcetively.
Succinct, insightful and 100% correct.
The only question is..."Will his ploy work?"
sp..I'm gonna bet that there are not enough of you in "we in NJ".
Hope I'm wrong...good luck!
In New Jersey, you have have two liberal parties. There's no conservative one. People vote for the real one cause as corrupt as they are, they're at least competent. One can't say that of NJ's Republicans who seem more interested in feathering their own nest instead of bringing meaningful change to the state.
