Russia technically isn't communist, but Putin is moving back towards authoritarianism (for instance, increased state control of the media) and has even brought back some communist symbolism. I don't think Russia will return to communism, it will just slide further into tyrannical crony capitalism.

Communism is a way of life, not red banners. As any way of life, it is characterized by how people relate to one another and to their society in socially important situations (so, saying "Gesundheit!" or its equivalent in any language does not count as similarity. But brown-nosing and backstabbing, or their relative prevalence, does).
Given this understanding, Russia is communist, has always been communist since its beginnings in 9 th century, and will continue being communist as long as it is going to exist, if only because there is neither experience nor even conceptual framework for its being or becoming anything else but a communist society.
