Colin Powell will not return for a second stint as secretary of state in a second Bush administration. If there is a reprise, that is. As if he even would be asked. And you heard it here first. Well, not really.
Mr. Powell actually announced it first, two weeks ago at a convention of minority journalists. Perhaps he didn't even know he did. It didn't come in the proverbial "so many words" but in three words.
Those words -- "parochial, political debates'' -- cement Powell's reputation as not only the Rockefeller Republican (self-described) that most party regulars know him to be but as an odd cross of an opportunistic Republican and a Republican of convenience.
Should President Bush lose on Nov. 2, Powell, if he had any desire to run for president -- or be Bill Frist or Chuck Hagel or Rick Santorum's running mate -- should kiss his chances goodbye in 2008. He could be a party outcast for years. Maybe it's by design.

Fine with me if Powell doesn't serve a second term. Replace him with Oliver North, and listen to the liberals scream while running out of Foggy Bottom.
Too cute.
Condi for Sec State and NSA!
Well, If Mr. Powell decides he doesn't want to do a second term, I think Oliver North would be an excellent candidate. What the left says doesn't matter. No one voted them in charge anyway.
To get Col. North confirmed would require major change in Senate composition. But one could dream... of the Senate finally making it right by Judge Bork... 20 yrs too late, though...
I admit, Colin Powell is not my favorite representative in the Bush administration.
So what?
He has demonstrated more loyalty to this President than certain others have accepted in the party. I do believe he is principled, intelligent, and hard working. Also, I do see the advantage to having strong willed individuals battle varying policies. If the committment is to secure America's best interests in the end, this debate can be healthy in developing a stronger policy.
I have suspicions myself that he may not remain in a second administration. Those suspicions are not predicated on the statement he made quoted in this article about not attending the convention. Frankly, I believe the author is stretching. He has his own opinion about Powell and what will occur, and has attempted to make of it more than it was.
If anything, it is more likely administration officials are staying away due to security threats.
If, after G.W. were to win, Powell stepped down I will thank him for his service. Then hope we are able to nominate someone that will reform the State Department from top to bottom. It definitely is in need of cleaning.
I think Powell will write a very, very interesting book at some point, and I wouldn't place a bet, either way, on how he will portray the Bush administration.
Excellent choice. Thousands of democrat heart attacks and strokes guaranteed.
And while we're at it, I think G. Gordon Liddy would make a fine press secretary.
Oliver North would be a GREAT choice! great man ! fine american !
I will not join those bashing Colin Powell for any reason. He has served this nation honorably for most of his adult life, and for that I am deeply thankful. He has also held his tongue and remained loyal to this President, and for that I am also grateful. God bless him.
I say Newt Gingrich. Newt has been very vocal about the need to change the culture at the State Dept. Give him a mandate to reform it the way Rummy is reforming DOD.
OOOOOHHHHH I'd love to see Newt!
Exactly.
Many alleged Republicans that won't vote for Bush also complain about Powell.
At least Powell has backed us, while these fairweather friends that claim to be conservatives and point and scream "RINO" are not supporting the President.
