Fliers advise teens on rights
The Boston GLobe ^ | August 14, 2004 | Emily Shartin

Using neon fliers that warn students in five languages to ''Look out," a Dorchester peace group is helping to alert teenagers that they have the right to keep their names off school lists given to military recruiters.

Dorchester People for Peace is working alongside several community and outreach groups to spread the word about a little-known provision of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which went into effect in 2002. Schools are now required to release the names, addresses, and phone numbers of high school juniors and seniors to military recruiters. Parents and students in Boston have until the end of September to remove their names from this year's list.

Members of these groups, as well as some school officials, say they are concerned that students may be unwittingly leaving themselves open to an unwanted sales pitch from the armed forces because they do not know that schools can release their names. Those who are raising the issue say they also worry that many young people, especially those in lower-income communities, do not hear opposing viewpoints and may be too easily persuaded by the military's promise of money for education and opportunities to travel.

We wouldn't want our children to think service for their country is an honorable thing to do, now would we?

Try passing fliers out to school kids on their Second Amendment rights and see what happens.

The 1960's and '70's were a revolutionary time in America. Everything was brought into question, and many things were overturned and revolutionized.

Much of the changes were good, notably the destruction of institutionalized racism in the U.S. but also many other things. Archaic, worn-out social conventions were discarded. Heretofore unseen opportunities for all were recognized.

However, as this article indicates, the final judgment on the '60's and '70's may be that the revolution did more harm than good.

If the revolutionary changes in the thinking of the American people had not occurred, a man like John Kerry would not be a serious candidate for the Presidency of the U.S.

The election of Kerry--or someone like him--would be so destructive to the United States and to the world, that it may overshadow even the good and the glory of the Civil Rights Revolution.

Liberals know all about people who are too stupid to be given choices. They are a key constituency of the Democrat party.

Eyes Wide Open--[Excerpts] The Los Angeles kids, chosen for their photographic skills and their ability to work with others, represented the Venice Arts Mecca, a
nonprofit organization that brings volunteer artists together with youngsters from low-income families to nurture their creativity in areas ranging from literary arts to
photography. They looked. They listened. They photographed. And they took notes for their journals.

……..Before embarking on their adventure, the kids--who were joined by two young people from Washington, D.C., and accompanied by adult mentors--studied
the sociopolitical history of South Africa, including apartheid. All were Latino or African American or a mix of the two, and were encouraged to think about their
own identity, their own experiences with racism.

…..At the conference exhibit hall, the L.A. kids mounted a photo exhibition showing the underbelly of America. There were bleak images of life on an Indian
reservation, of the homeless in Los Angeles. It was an eye-opener to some South Africans, who thought everyone in America was rich. "They were absolutely
shocked," said Lynn Warshafsky, executive director of Venice Arts Mecca.

In turn, the L.A. group was surprised at the degree of anti-American sentiment, something they had to process. "They had to ask themselves questions they'd never
asked before" about how others see them, Warshafsky said.

……..For Eamon, the highlight was hearing Fidel Castro speak. "I had thought of him as seriously evil. I realized he's not evil, he's doing what he thinks is best. He
has this sort of demeanor about him. Whether you like him or not, you respect him. It opened my eyes." [End Excerpts]

Five languages. If they are going to American schools and are junior and senior grades and don't know English then I don't want them in the U.S. military.

I realized he's not evil, he's doing what he thinks is best.

Woe to them that call good evil, and evil good! (Isa. 5:20)

Hitler was just doing what he thought was best for Germany. Stalin was just doing what he thought was best for Russia. Etc, etc, etc.

Moral relatavism run amok.

Typical liberal "nanny" attitude. If the kids are old enough to be of interest to the military, they are old enough to tell the recruiters to take a flying Forbes at a rolling donut, if they aren't interested or a hostile.
