Assembly rejects ban on gun sales at San Francisco's Cow Palace

SACRAMENTO (AP)

A proposed ban on gun shows at San Francisco's state-owned Cow Palace failed to pass the state Assembly on Thursday, but backers will try again later this month.

The bill, aiming to stop Cow Palace gun shows in a neighborhood plagued by shootings and murders, received a 38-36 vote, three votes shy of 41-vote majority. If passed, it would have added the state facility to a growing list of county fairgrounds across California that have banned the shows.

Thursday's vote represented another episode in the state's fierce debate over constitutional rights of gun owners and those trying to limit guns. Many Democrats claimed the proposed ban is a "modest proposal" sought by residents of nearby crime-plagued neighborhoods. But rural Republicans argued that legal gun shows don't cause urban shootings. Several Democrats joined Republicans in rejecting a ban.

"This bill will do nothing to solve that problem," said Assemblyman Russ Bogh, R-Beaumont. "It will make a number of us on this floor feel good, and leave the public with the notion that this bill is addressing the violence in California."

Wow. I'm delightfully surprised that it *didn't* pass in the liberal-dominated California Assembly. Bet the gun-grabbers come back for a second crack at it though.

"A neighborhood plagued by shootings and murders"

And which party is in control of this town, again? Hmmm?

Supporters said Los Angeles, Santa Clara, San Mateo and Alameda counties already ban gun shows.

And neither of these counties have had reduced gun violence since banning gun shows. LA county just shot up 17 people over last weekend. None of the 17 victims were shot by white males or members of the NRA. None of the 17 victims were white males or members of the NRA. If there was any common factor among the victims or their shooters it was gangs. Gangs are common when fathers are absent. If they didn't kill each other with guns, they'd use knives.

But the Democrats just won't get it through their heads that a single mother cannot deal with a teenage male. That's too politically incorrect and too much of an indictment against feminism to deal with.

I'm warnin' ya' guys. The more women in the Capital, the less guns in your safe.

Gotta keep watching. These things have a way of resurrecting. I faxxed my assembly "rep", Loni Hancock, former mayor of Berkely. Think I'll call her office next week and see how she voted.

And, btw, I'm a woman, and my gun safe isn't exactly empty. :)

They must have felt there was more money to get out of people so they will send it around again.

Jackie Speir is quoted in the article, saying it will be brought up again this month. Call, write, fax. Keep up the pressure.

Don't start the party yet. All the outstanding votes are Dems, and only 12 % of them crossed over on the prior vote.

Chances are good it'll pass on the next legislative day.

Ya gotta love that "Rule of 41". Nothing passes the Assembly without 41 "Yes" votes. It doesn't matter how many members are present. If only 41 are present, then all 41 must vote yes.

I'll save you the suspense, she voted for it. (Though a call to let her know you're concerned and re-urging a 'no' couldn't hurt)

"I'm warnin' ya' guys. The more women in the Capital, the less guns in your safe."

A state official was recently overheard admitting that a full 40% of all Alabama female drivers pack heat in their vehicles, legally.

You'd be hard-pressed to find any other state with that many male drivers actually carrying a firearm.

So you see, it isn't *women* who are the problem, but leftists. Forget gender. Your enemy has plenty of both natural genders.

Senator Kerry, for instance, has voted *this year* to ban .30-30 ammunition. He's also voted to ban Mini-14's and semi-auto shotguns. He's even voted to require all gun owners to register themselves like cattle.

And here's a clue: he ain't female.

Huh, unless San Francisco annexed the Cow Palace, the Cow Palace is located in Daly City, not San Francisco.

That Daly City/Colma/Brisbane border is tough to spot. I think of it as being 'in' San Francisco, too. When you get a few blocks down to Bayshore on Geneva (which runs past the Cow Palace - Grand National coming soon, btw) by then you're on the border or in Brisbane. But, you're right.
