Watching the approach I don't think this is hype at all. God save these people...
I've lived on the Gulf Coast my entire life. There's no hype about a borderline Category 5 storm, none at all.
The only way this could be "worse" for Ft. Meyers (or wherever it makes landfall and just to the east of that point) would be if the storm was moving more slowly.
The surge is going to suck, as will the wind, but at least the periods of very intense rain will not be too long since the storm will clear the area within a few hours.
A few years back we had a "cat 5" blow down a sign on the Texas gulf coast. Sometimes the media (and the government) lie to you. (for your own good of course) when you are 20 miles from a big cat 4, you should be catching all hell. 100+ winds.
Ft Meyers getting 60+, now that makes much more sense. This might be a bad one.
