A HURRICANE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE FLORIDA KEYS FROM THE DRY TORTUGAS TO THE SEVEN MILE BRIDGE...AND FOR THE FLORIDA WEST COAST FROM EAST CAPE SABLE NORTHWARD TO THE STEINHATCHEE RIVER. A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED WITHIN THE WARNING AREA DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS. PREPARATIONS SHOULD BE RUSHED TO COMPLETION.
THE TROPICAL STORM WARNING FOR THE FLORIDA AND GEORGIA COASTS WERE RECENTLY EXTENDED SOUTHWARD TO JUPITER INLET FLORIDA AND ARE NOW IN EFFECT FROM THE SOUTH SANTEE RIVER SOUTH CAROLINA TO JUPITER INLET. A TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE FLORIDA KEYS FROM THE SEVEN MILE BRIDGE TO OCEAN REEF...AND ALONG THE SOUTH FLORIDA MAINLAND FROM OCEAN REEF TO EAST CAPE SABLE...INCLUDING FLORIDA BAY AND LAKE OKEECHOBEE.
A HURRICANE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM FLAGLER BEACH FLORIDA NORTHWARD TO THE SAVANNAH RIVER NEAR THE GEORGIA/SOUTH CAROLINA BORDER.
A TROPICAL STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S. COAST FROM OCEAN REEF NORTHWARD TO SOUTH OF COCOA BEACH AND FROM THE SOUTH SANTEE RIVER NORTHWARD TO OREGON INLET NORTH CAROLINA INCLUDING PAMLICO SOUND.
AT 1 PM EDT...1700Z...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE CHARLEY WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 25.7 NORTH...LONGITUDE 82.5 WEST OR ABOUT 70 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF FORT MYERS FLORIDA.
CHARLEY IS NOW MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHEAST NEAR 20 MPH AND THIS MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TODAY WITH AN INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED. ON THIS TRACK...THE CENTER OF THE HURRICANE SHOULD REACH THE COAST IN THE VICINITY OF CHARLOTTE HARBOR LATER THIS AFTERNOON.
RECENT REPORTS FROM A RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 125 MPH...WITH HIGHER GUSTS...CATEGORY THREE ON THE SAFFIR/SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE. THESE STRONGEST WINDS ARE CONFINED TO A SMALL AREA WITHIN A FEW MILES FROM CHARLEYS CENTER.
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 30 MILES... 45 KM... FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 105 MILES...165 KM.
ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 964 MB...28.46 INCHES.
STORM SURGE FLOODING IN THE FLORIDA KEYS WILL BE SUBSIDING LATER TODAY. STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 10 TO 13 FEET IS EXPECTED NEAR AND SOUTH OF THE WHERE THE CENTER CROSSES THE FLORIDA WEST COAST. STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 4 TO 7 FEET ALONG AND NEAR THE GEORGIA COAST IN THE NEXT 24 HOURS WITH LESSER FLOODING TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH.
RAINFALL TOTALS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES ARE LIKELY ALONG CHARLEYS PATH ACROSS THE EASTERN UNITED STATES. THESE RAINS COULD CAUSE LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODS.

Senator John Kerry is taking his swift boat crew down to the Florida Keys as we speak. He's fought Charley once before, you know.
It's dead calm here at the moment, but that radar loop indicates the winds will start picking up very shortly, and I'm south of you. I got up at 7:00 this morning and started in on the laundry, and my last load is in the dryer. Floors are vacuumed, dishes are washed. If the power goes out, everything I need electricity for is done. I think our area's biggest concern will be trees coming down because of the wet ground, and landing on power lines.
A tropical depression, I hope!
Last year when we thought we might have a storm coming in someone called to check on me. I told her I was cleaning house, washing and cooking. She asked why I wasn't out getting ready. Funny, because that is just what I was doing :').
I'm just N of Orlando in the direct path but looks like it won't be much worse than the regular afternoon thunderstorms.
Do you still think the same now? Just wondering.

The mobile home park at Paradise Beach north of Malibu, CA, is on some of the most expensive real estate in the world. Lovely mobiles and very vibrant residents. You'd be fortunate to be able to afford living there.

Just came home from getting today's paper and lunch from McDonald's. Looks like we're under a hurricane warning, flood watch, and tornado watch. But so far it hasn't done much other than rain. Howz bout you?
Note: Tres came down this morning in North Raleigh - from the rain!!!!! No wind!!!! We will see a LOT more of that through the day today. Expect blocked roads, trees on houses.

WRAL TV weather unfortunately is not as good as WPTF weather man Joe Bustardi - and he is NOT ON WPTF Radio now - they have a national program on. THIS IS REMINISCENT OF FRAN - I remember well listening to WPTF Radio their stupid program on history something or other when the power was going out and trees were thudding all around!!! Finally turned the radio to one of the FM Rock stations and the guy there did a terrific job.....DJ - I don't remember his name.....but he just stepped into the roll and did beautifully.
That huge band of wind/rain that you see on the radar - cannot help but push trees over. I have made my choice to stay put and pray the huge trees around me stay upright...but if they crash - so be it. Insurance, roof man, repair people = here we come!
Have the stuff might need downstairs in the interior closet and bath.
Did not manage to get extra water but I can walk for water if needed.
We are going to have power outages and we ARE going to have structural damage in this area and Crabtree Creek IS going to flood. That mall is closed except for Sears and Belks - but they will close soon I am sure.
Sorry - know this is too much for what may be a wimp of a situation - but Floyd was "nothing" too and knocked down a bunch of trees - including one here. I think WRAL is wrong.
I grew up in South Texas and South Louisiana (as a child in the 1960's we lost a swing set to a hurricane, and we were a bit inland.)

After this storm is over, if mother nature didn't do it for you, if I were you I'd pay to have some of those big trees taken down. It's worth every penny if it helps your peace of mind. That's what I did within a year or so of moving into this house and a minor hurricane threw a giant limb off of an old tree right next to the house. Worth every penny. I could feel the ground shake when that limb came down. Any trees that might fall on my house now are slender, and are far enough away that if they do hit they won't actually come into the house, although they might muss things up on the roof.

That was my point. He was spouting off about it not being that bad when we were not getting too many reports right after the storm went through and having gone through several hurricanes sometimes it takes a while for the real damage to be assessed.
I live 15 miles north of where Hurricane Audrey came through. The people here have a healthy respect for hurricanes and do not take any storm lightly. I know several people who lived through that nightmare and their stories are heartrending.

On June 27, 1957, a hurricane named Audrey hurled a deadly raging ocean of water over quaint Cameron Parish, Louisiana. It was a Category 4 Hurricane and in a matter of hours, wiped out every movable object in her path, forever changing the lives and souls of Cameron Parish residents. Hurricane Audrey killed 425 people, 154 of whom were under the age of 9.
This book is a memorial to those who lost their lives and a testimony of those who overcame their devastation. The stories are all told through the true life experiences of the victims of Hurricane Audrey and should be preserved for them and generations to come.

It's been raining on and off for a couple of hours now - nothing like how heavy it was overnight, though. And it is very foggy.
Hubby just went up to food Lion to pick up some cold cuts - I'm curious to hear what he has to report. In Dover the slightest hint of any kind of storm would empty supermarket shelves in an instant. Folks around here don't seem to be quite as neurotic. The FL is on 13 at the corner of the road to Chincoteague.
This ain't no Fran. (Thank God).
So calm right now. Keep praying!
My point is that he obviously knows by now he spoke entirely too soon, in which case it isn't very sporting to rub it in.
