Have you heard any reports from the Kissimee area?
The Gulf Stream?
It was early when it passed over that town.
I'd guess still 125+ mph at that time, maybe 130 mph.
Eye was right over it, so the winds were very high over everything present.
(Unlike Orlando, for example, which is more spread out.)
They're frantically trying to create that myth already; Jeb Bush has already addressed it.
That part of Florida had some of the FIRST evac orders.
There were comparisons to Andrew damage most all day. While Charley missed the highly populated Tampa Bay area (Andrew struck south of Miami) Charley ripped through high population areas throughout the interior of the state (whereas Andrew traversed the Everglades). Expect numbers to match or top Andrew.
I need to find the name of that guy who repaired our roof after Isabel. We lost some shingles; we're bound to lose some again.
They're talking about it coming right up I-95. I should have done my laundry this evening instead of watching the Olympic ceremonies. I'll be up early doing the laundry and vacuuming, things you can't do when the power is out. We've got batteries, flashlights, enough food in the house, etc.
On that note...I'm outta here. I hope when I wake up tomorrow the news will be better. I hope Florida took most of the mickey out of Charley....hey, that's a pun, sort of! LOL!
Do you have a link to the Ft. Myers webcast?
You made it!
I was in Raleigh during Fran -- lived in that apartment complex up on the hill behind Crabtree Valley Mall. Thought my car would be nice and safe in the parking lot with no trees around it. But I picked the ONE parking place in the ENTIRE lot that a tree from across the street picked to fall upon - my car was crushed.
This CA gal had never gone through a hurricane. I will never forget that night -- transformers going off like bombs. Luckily, I think we were on the same power grid as Rex Hospital so we were up and running within one day. But it took forever to put Raleigh back together after Fran.
Prayers for you all now in Charley's path! I'm in DC, but it looks like we'll just get the remnants of it....I'm hoping...
Eye passed right over the intersection of I-4 and Hwy 192 and International Drive - damage area probably gutted almost all of the tourist stuff south of Orlando:
Nothing from Disney yet?
Nothing from Universal Studios?
Did the Killer whales swim free from Seaworld into the swamps?
Both, it was the Charlotte County emergency operations manager giving the report.
I've heard estimates of 15 billion already.
Thanks!
Ping me if you hear any more info please!
...and thanks!
Thanks for the response. That is not good news. I wouldn't be surprised if the warehouse is not flattened. Just a metal building.
Didn't Jeb declare a state of emergency yesterday and told folks to get out??
I was in Ft. Lauderdale for Andrew. We were relieved and joked about how anticlimactic it was after it passed 30-40 miles south of us. Big deal we said.
Then the power came back on, and the first footage of the damage around Miami came on TV, and we stopped joking. I'm afraid the same thing's gonna happen here come morning.
Pasco Co. House literally exploded, only two walls remained in the safe room (bathroom).
Well, yes, he did. But never mind all that. A Bush has to be blamed.
