Well, I stared at the television in disbelief yesterday as our Governor deftly postioned himself as a victim and did everything possible to disenfranchize the people of New Jersey and maintain the Democrats power. It is unfortunate most people who viewed yesterday's new conference will miss the slick manipulation that was taking place even in the gov's public confession.
For those of you who don't know our governor Jim McGreevey came out of the closet yesterday. "My truth is that I am a Gay American". I thought this was a very interesting statement on quite a few levels. First off, there is the postmodern and relativist flavor of the phrase "my truth". In postmodern America, we all have different truths and it is all OK. For instance Jims truth is that he is a Gay American while my truth might be that I am Spiderman. If I believe something about reality it makes it true for me, although it doesn't have to be true for anyone else. In New Jersey there is no longer a thing called "true truth" to use Francis Shaeffer's great term.
More importantly though is McGreevey's assertion that he is a Gay American. Why did McGreevey use the term "Gay American" as opposed to just stating that "I am gay"? With the use of this phrase the Governor accomplised two things. He postioned himself with other hyphenated American victims of white, male, heterosexual oppression. The other thing he did was absolve himself of responsiblity since most Americans believe the lie that our sexual orientation in our genes, just like an Afirican American's nappy curls, a Latino American's mocha pigmentation or an Irish American's red hair is in their genes. McGreevy's plea is "I can't help myself, I am a victim of bad biochemistry. Don't you feel sorry for me? And don't you dare come after me you narrow minded homophobes."
McGreevy's confession assumes that we are shocked. So is anybody shocked? The rumours about McGreevey's sexuality have been floating around for a long time. When Golan Cipel was appointed as McGreevy's there were wispers that he has a relationship with the Governor that was more than less than professional and more than friends. These suspicions grew when Cipel was unable to get security clearance by the Feds and had to give up his $110,000 a year job. Why did McGreevey nominate him in the first place, we wondered. Coincidentally to the Governor's confession, Cipel filed a sexual harrassement suit against him. But apart from Cipel, McGreevey's homosexuality has really been an open secret. One of the best tongue in cheek articles I have read on the subject is entitled THE PROBLEM WITH GOVERNOR MCGREEVEY"> STRAIGHT TALK written by Gordon Bishop and published in The Atlantic Highlands Herald on May 2, 2002 -- years before problems surrounding the Governor over secret words, land deals, and video taped affairs.
Finally, the timing of McGreevey's resignation is a deft political move to keeps his party in power. The Democrats have done it again. By postponing the date of his resignation till November 15, he steals the opportunity for the the people of this state to democratically elect his replacement. Any date before that we would have had that opportunity. Once again, the Democrats of New Jersey have shown us that what is really important is not integrity, not the right of the people of this state to choose, not honesty, put power. I wonder if enough people in my state care enough to do anything about it?
Rallying cry for NJ GOP:
"We want a governor who is ELECTED NOT SELECTED!"
As I mentioned in a previous post . I am proud to have voted "STRAIGHT" Republican in Zoo Jersey !!
McGreevey originally wanted to say he was a "gay Irish-American"..trying to touch all the bases, but he was afraid of all the Gaelic jokes..
Oh, he forgot to say Catholic, too.
He needs to get out now.
