Rift grows as Iranians caught fighting for Sadr
Michael Howard in Baghdad Friday August 13, 2004 The Guardian
Security officials in Baghdad were last night urgently investigating the background of 30 Iranians who were caught fighting for a rebel Shia cleric in Iraq, amid mounting concern over the involvement of the Tehran regime in the uprising. The Guardian has learned that the most senior members of the Iraqi government were briefed about the capture of the men yesterday, and also told of other evidence that fighters and equipment have been crossing the border from Iran.
The 30 men were captured in the southern city of Kut on Wednesday and officials are trying to establish whether they have any links to Tehran.
"We are checking their identities but if they are found to have links to the Iranians then that would be tantamount to a declaration of war by them," said a senior Iraqi source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The source said members of Iraq's national security committee had yesterday been presented "with revealing information about the extent of Iranian involvement in Iraqi affairs", which was being taken seriously at the "highest echelons of government".

so true, so true
The Guardian published this?
That can only mean it is working.
Yep....
This will be interesting to watch. Iran it seems, is comitting suicide.
Yeah, BUSHwhacked! The sooner the better. Can't wait to see the French wet themselves again.
;-)
I am shocked, truly shocked.
It is suicide for the Mullahs in Iran if the Iraqis achive a democratic state. It is a matter of survival for them to beat us in Iraq.
Agreed. Iraq will stabalize as soon as it's major players have to return home to confront freedom there. Spread those little f---ers out and thin the herd.

Very true. They do seem to be jumping out of the fat into the frying pan though.
The war with Iran is coming and it's coming soon.
Casus belli. But what to do.
Maybe the internal pressures are greater than we thought.
Bye-bye Iran...
Bump for great justice
re: "western capitalism threatens their strangle hold on the Iranian populace"
It occurs to me that it's one thing to preach against western excesses and capitalism when it's really not available to the population, but quite another when it's there and it's up to them to resist the temptation to have a drink or buy a girlie magazine. Iran's mullah's are smart enough to realize that once Iraq is 'liberated' it's only a matter of time before all manner of things they consider evil are commonly available to any who would partake. It's going to be much harder to convince the populace to resist temptation when it's more than a theory, but actually knocking at their doors.
They need to turn the Iranian "fighters" out on the street to face the Iraqi's that they have been killing of late. Film it and let the Iranians see what will happen to fighters that come to Iraq. Reinforcements will slow to a trickle then stop.
