Lesbian couple pleads guilty of attempted murder

Two lesbian lovers confessed Monday in a San Diego federal court to several failed attempts to murder one woman's husband, in an effort to get his life insurance money.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Astrid Tepatti, 21, admitted to shooting at her husband, Sgt. Stephen Tepatti, on Jan. 4 while he slept -- using a potato as a silencer for the gun.

She missed, shredding the potato, and waking him up.

She ran away from the scene, but when her husband saw her minutes later, he realized that she was wearing the same outfit as the person who just fired at him.

That evening, Astrid Tepatti was driving with her girlfriend Ebony Woods, 21, when they had problems with their car and had to pull over. A California Highway Patrol officer stopped to help, but became suspicious when the two women couldn't give the same story on why their car was damaged.

Inside the car, investigators found a .30-caliber Ruger revolver, 48 rounds of ammunition and several baggies containing homemade ricin, a poison listed by the federal government as a biological weapon. The women learned how to make ricin from a white supremacist Web site, prosecutors say.

Prosecutors also say the women paid a hit man $10,000 to kill Stephen Tepatti in August. While the hit man stabbed Tepatti in the neck, he survived.

In another unsuccessful attempt, according to the prosecution, the women tried feeding Tepatti food laced with Valium and other tranquilizers, but the drugs just made him tired.

Astrid Tepatti faces nearly six years in prison at a hearing set for Oct. 29.

Woods may get up to nine years at her Nov. 5 hearing, because she wanted a share in Stephen Tepatti's $500,000 life insurance proceeds.

"Ricin"?

Talk about crappy reporting. This stuff could have just as easily been spread around. Shouldn't they be getting some Federal charges, too?

Or isn't there a "zero tolerance" policy on this?
