Taliban Leader Killed Leading Ambush on U.S. Convoy

KABUL (Reuters) - A known Taliban guerrilla leader was killed by U.S.-led and Afghan forces after leading an ambush on a military convoy in eastern Afghanistan, a provincial security officer said on Thursday. The Taliban attacked the convoy on Wednesday in the district of Alishing in Laghman province, some 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Kabul.

After a two-hour firefight near the village of Qala, the attackers fled leaving behind the body of Mullah Janan, a known Taliban military commander, Laghman's deputy security commander told Reuters.

In another incident two Taliban fighters were captured in the Maruf district on the southern province of Kandahar on Tuesday night, according to Raziq Khan, commander of the Afghan army brigade at Spin Boldak, near the border with Pakistan.

Khan said the two men were cornered in the village of Esa Khail after smuggling arms into the country.

Close to 18,000 U.S.-led troops are in Afghanistan hunting Taliban and al Qaeda members.

Remnants of the Taliban militia, driven from power by U.S.-led forces in late 2001, have stepped up a guerrilla campaign to disrupt preparations for the country's first democratic presidential election on October 9.

Nearly a thousand people have been killed in violence in the past 12 months.

Just as long as he didn't get his feelings hurt. We must fight a more sensitive war.

You're right! Good memory!

Me thinks there is a swinging door for some of these terrorists.
So, I suppose this is the second encounter with Allied Forces.
Or could it be 3rd, 4th, or 5th encounter?

I hope he's really dead, this time!!!!!

How did he get let go?

JAG and MP officers listen to these guys' sob stories, and often choose to believe the scumbag rather than the guy that caught him. Also, the MPs (remember, in the MP world Janis Karpinski -- who has evaded any responsibility for her out-of-control 800th MP Brigade -- is an outstanding officer, and the other Abu Ghraib jerks are considered good troops!) frequently lose the capture documents or separate them from the scumbag. We finally started duct taping them to his chest and the JAGs told us that was "inhumane," stop. STILL the MP and MI element managed to dissociate documents from the PUCs (Persons Under US Control). The poor terrorist lost large clumps of his chest hair for nothing....

Finally, because our language prep is poor across the board, the interrogators can primarily talk to these guys only through local-hire interpreters, who are not trustworthy. It is a lot harder to get to Gitmo that the Left seems to believe. It is remotely possible that some of the terrs scarfed up in Nov. and Dec, 2001, are small fish or even innocents, but anybody bagged and held since 2002 not only is up against proof positive he's a dirtbag, but also didn't get the lucky break of the MPs losing track of his stuff, that most of his terrorist associates got.

I dunno if they fixed the problem. I do know a lot of guys will not take the risks to take prisoners in their second tour that they did in their first. Nobody's going to shoot a surrendering enemy in cold blood, but nobody is going to risk stopping a round himself now that they know how badly MP and MI elements mishandle the persons in custody.

Chris Speer got killed taking a scumbag alive, Omar Al-Khadr, who was just lying doggo and murdered him. Al-Khadr has already been released thanks to Jacques Chirac (he is nominally Canadian, although he considers infidel nations to be false concepts), and reunited with his terrorist family to plot new murders and crimes.

The problem is that after eight years of Clinton social engineering, the Army is full of relativistic girls (of both birth sexes) who won't do what is necessary in a war. These people ride roughshod over the Bush people; God alone can imagine the damage a Kerry presidency, with four more years of left-wing social experimentation, could do.

Maybe it was an attempt at a "more sensitive approach."
