Simulated drills show Taiwan overrun in 6 days TAIPEI - Taiwan's armed forces staged a drill simulating an invasion by China yesterday as a military computer exercise showed that Taiwanese troops could withstand a similar onslaught for just six days.
The scenario of the manoeuvre, the first of two rehearsals for a major exercise to be held on Aug 25, was that Taiwanese troops had failed to hold off an amphibious landing by Chinese forces, TVBS cable television showed.
As the island's troops tried to stop simulated Chinese forces from pushing further inland, a fleet of US-made Cobra gunships fired laser-guided Hellfire missiles while howitzers and tanks fired on targets.
Defence Minister Lee Jye confirmed a report that in a recent computer-simulated exercise, Taiwanese troops were wiped out 130 hours after the People's Liberation Army started invading.
But Mr Lee was swift to urge the Taiwanese not to panic over the outcome of the simulation.
'The computer drill included the toughest scenarios so that we are able to know where our flaws are,' he told reporters.
The Defence Ministry issued a carefully worded statement to describe the computer war games, saying: 'Although the defending troops suffered severe losses, the losses by the invading troops were several times bigger. If we consider it as a war between the two sides, this indicates the enemy will have to pay a painful price.'
Also, the simulated attacks did not include intervention by the US or Japan, the Chinese-language Apple Daily said. -- AFP, Reuters
Ping!
The Reds could lose 500,000 and it would be a drop in the bucket.
The "China lacks the ability to invade Taiwan" canard, beloved by many military experts, is utterly false, as this goes to show.
Yes, China lacks the ability to attack Taiwan Normandy-style, but that doesn't mean that they can't attack: and it doesn't mean that they can't win.
The only thing which could save Taiwan would be massive intervention by the US Navy to isolate the Island and prevent seaborne attacks, as well as the deployment of several Divisions of US grounds troops to stiffen up Taiwan's conscript force.
They have 20 million males to dispose of to achieve parity in gender balance. They'd see it as a benefit.

AFP = Agent France Presse, a very left-wing news organization. And Reuters reputation preceeds them by the stench alone.
One of the reasons D-Day succeeded was the local superiority of the Allied forces. The Germans redressed this several days after the landings, but Ike was able to put five division and two airborne divisions ashore in a day. He had local superiority plus command of the air.
Taiwan would be buzzing with armed Taiwanese if the Chinese tip their hand too soon.

That is why we should give Taiwan a single medium range MIRV'ed nuke and let them control it.
Except they wouldn't even lose that.
A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would go like this:
On the first day, a thousand or so ballistic missiles will slam into Taiwan, along with strikes by thousands of saboteurs and a thousand or so combat aircraft. Taiwan's Navy will be overwhelmed and sunk within hours. Every target of military value (and many of none) will be hit repeatedly by the largest barage of missiles that the world has ever seen.
At the same time, an entire Corps of Chinese Paratroopers will land of the Island to seize a foothold wherever they can. Soon they will be joined by other forces.
By the fifth or sixth day, Taiwan's forces will be either entirely destroyed or forced to surrender.
How many Chinese troops have been trained to swim that distance? Cause as it stands now, that's the only way they can get there in the numbers needed for an invasion.
If we remained out of the direct conflict, we would at least end all trade with China and the result would be disasterous for China's economy. Those money grubbing Chinese leaders were shot in the leg, not in the head
"'The computer drill included the toughest scenarios so that we are able to know where our flaws are,'"
Ummm...you're outnumbered 7 to 1 for starters...
China's entire economy is based on cheaply manufactured goods for export, without that they starve. As it stands right now, they can't even feed themselves with what they currently grow and raise.
"As it stands right now, they can't even feed themselves with what they currently grow and raise."
What does that have to do with the price of eggs in China?
Kidding...you make a good point - Communism sucks.
For some reason this reminds me of the Indian air force winning war games with the US air force.
Does Tiawan have some defense buying spree they are tying to get approved?
patent
Japan has no military. But they have a pretty nice defense force. The Chinese are still nervous about the japs even after 60 years.
As a matter of fact, they do. They are not haggling about the purchase price.
yeah they are approved to get 3 desil subs I think and a bunch of missile hardware. However the subs might get shelved. Me thinks Taiwan might have an Ace up its sleeve. ... and no not just us.
