KOLKATA: The man, whose crime 14 years ago has kept the city following the fate of his punishment, is dying on his birthday. Dhananjoy Chatterjee is going to be hanged at Alipore Central Jail at 4.30 am on August 14, unless another round of legal battle keeps him alive for a few more days.
The state government's announcement came even as human rights activists were plotting their next move to save Chatterjee and took everyone, including many officials in the government and hangman Nata Mallick, by surprise. The news, broken first by inspector-general (prisons) Jaydeb Chakraborty at Writers' Buildings, appears to have brought the curtains down on a protracted battle sometimes in court and sometimes inside Rashtrapati Bhavan to save the security guard who wreaked a perverse revenge on schoolgoer Hetal Parekh for complaining to her father against his lewd passes. The revenge he took was unlike most other brutal-as-theycome rape-and-kill cases; he first raped her, then strangled her and then raped her again after she had died. This was on March 5, 1990.
On Tuesday, he continued to eat and listen to the radio (for better news) after knowing that he would be dying on his birthday and a day before one of the country's most joyous anniversaries. Chatterjee got the news around 7 pm, the same time that human rights groups like the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights and lawyers went into a huddle to plot their move. "The highhanded move bypasses several laws and we will try to attract the Supreme Court's attention to this," advocate Jaymalya Bagchi said. But the mood was one of acceptance. "The timeframe is for the government to decide," APDR general secretary Sujato Bhadra said. The government maintained it had acted keeping the laws of the land in mind. "Section 911 of the Jail Code is very clear on the issue. The rule stipulates that the hanging must take place between 21 days and 28 days of the decision taken by the Supreme Court on a special leave petition and this does not cover a Presidential rejection of a mercy plea," state law minister Nisith Adhikari said.
But it was the secrecy involving the decision that caught everyone off guard. Even Nata Mallick did not hear the news till late evening.
Chakraborty said all arrangements for the hanging had been completed. "His family has been informed and, if they ask to be present during the hanging, we will consider the plea. And if his family does not collect the body, we will cremate it," he said.
I wonder if the guards and executioner will surround him, clap their hands and sing Happy Birthdy To You like they do at Benigans.
Btw, this is in India (for those wondering).
Darn. I thought this was a story about a rapist who was born on August 19.
Header should read "Rapist/Murderer/Necropheliac to be hanged on his B'day"
"Rapist to be hanged on his B'day"
It America, this alone would be grounds for an appeal.
Lmao
"Oh, its a necktie. Gee how nice, thanks."
When he blows out the candles on his cake I'll bet his wish doesn't come true.
All together now, "Happy Birthday to you....
(That's sarcasm. I know Japan has it, too.)
ooops, forget the last part.
Happy Birthday to You,
Happy Birthday to You,
Happy B......
I think they should castrate him a few days before his birthday, let him get used to this type of humiliation, and then hang him.
as long as they use hemp rope, the Greens should be happy.
August 15th would have been fine ,but the only problem being it's India's independence day-u don't want to get ur hands all dirty ( & get the media hounding u) on that auspicious day.
August 13th-well is a date with 13-say isn't that a FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In America, this alone would be grounds for an appeal.
Yep, our justice system has been overrun with justice hating whackos.
