SANTA FE, N.M. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Tuesday that he is unlikely to support a push by some fellow Republicans to bar the Legislature from granting driver's licenses to undocumented workers in California and to cut off their access to government subsidies for housing, food and higher education.
"I think it's old hat," Schwarzenegger said of the proposal, which some conservatives hope to place on the ballot by 2006, during an interview following a two-day conference with governors from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and six Mexican states along the U.S. border.
-snip-
In 1994, Schwarzenegger was among a majority of Californians who supported Proposition 187, which sought to limit illegal immigrants' access to government services. Most of the initiative was later thrown out in court.
Earlier this month, a group of conservative Republicans said it would push a ballot measure to bring back some of those limits in a fashion the courts could uphold, and to block lawmakers from granting licenses to undocumented drivers.
Schwarzenegger said Tuesday that while he had not studied the plan, it did not sound like something he would want to support.
"We should find ways to work together rather than to find ways of going the other way," he said.

...and yet his approval rating is 65%--one of the highest numbers ever. hmmmmmmmmm That's because he is the Democratic Governor of California.
You didn't really buy that "Republican" thing did you?
A real Republican would never be voted into the California Governorship anymore.

No, Democratic Governors are ignoring the HUGE illegal alien problem which far eclipses any other problem that california faces.
Kudos for the car tax ... but we wouldn't need it in the first place if we weren't handing out benefits to anyone who stepped across the border.

A year later and you McClintock supporters are still trying to ping folks into flamewars?
Our beef was that Davis' giving illegals regular DL's would give them cover to vote in our elections. The left had pushed hard not to have the DL's indicate in any fashion that the bearer was not legally a U.S. and California citizen.
Not only would Schwarzenegger's limits prevent this from happening, but illegals would be forced to register and identify themselves to authorities. Works for me...

This is political jujitsu at its finest. California Dems get to pass a driver's license law for illegals, yet the new document is worth no more to illegals than their old Mexican license.
I hadn't looked at it this way... thanks for your commentary and insight :-)

A *different* driver's license, however, is not only acceptable, it is a thing of beauty. Illegals have to register with the government to get it, have to show proof of insurance to get it, have to pay taxes to get it, and it gives them *nothing* more than they already get with their Mexican driver's licenses.
I don't know how things are down in 'Bama but here in CA if you think that illegals are going to line up to get a driver's license and then rush out and pay for auto insurance, you've got cotton stuffed between your ears! ROFLMAO
For ya'll down South and the rest of you "out-of-staters", this BS of allowing illegals to obtain a driver's license has nothing to do with driving and everything to do with Motor Voter(ya see the 'Rats want to be able to get their illegal Hispanic friends the opportunity to go down to the DMV and obtain a driver's license and then go to the next window and register to vote...
Anyone from Mexico or anywhere else in the world does not need a CA driver's license to drive in CA or anywhere else in America as long as they have a legal driver's license from the country from whence they came...
Different California license for illegals = SCAM!

I hope you're right about this, but it doesn't begin to solve the problem of all the benefits that the millions of illegals here are receiving (schooling, medical, housing, food stamps, etc.etc.etc.) now while they continue to rape California taxpayers. Arnold never did have my vote, and that opinion continues. What a disappointment he is!

And just who is going to "force" any illegal to register and identify themselves to authorities? YOU?
ROFLMAO
The only thing that "works for me" is the enforcement of the immigration laws on the books.
Heavy fines for those who employ illegals and deportation of illegals who are caught! PERIOD

"And just who is going to "force" any illegal to register and identify themselves to authorities?" Registration happens by default when they apply for their Migrant Licenses at your state driver's license office.
If they want the license, they have to register. Ain't no way 'round that. The given address on the license is where the license is mailed...

ROFLMAO Allow me to second that. I heard on local TV the other day (I live in LA), that it is estimated that 40% of driver's on our city streets are unlicensed, and even more are uninsured.
Therefore, we are supposed to belive that people who
1)Entered the Country Illegally
2)*IF* the work, do so illegally
3) Drive illegally
4) operate a motor vehicle without insurance illegally
Are all of a sudden folks who have thumbed their nose at every US law in their path, are suddenly going to grow a civic concious and beat a path to the local insurance company so that they may follow the letter of the law.
Come on, guys. Take a few moments and think it out.

Quite the opposite, you get the license and then you are allowed to register to vote
That's the whole scam behind allowing the illegals the privilege of a CA driver's license so the 'Rats can get them registered to vote

Immigration enforcement is the answer, not silly yellow "licenses".
Go to Mexico and see if they'll give you one.

I have already explained to you twice what this whole issue is about...now if you can't understand it then I can't help you...the Mexicans who are licensed to drive in Mexico don't need a CA driver's license to drive here...Hellooo???
This is about Motor Voter!!! After they get the paperwork for a driver's license then they will be able to go to the next window and register to vote...Now I really have spent entirely too much time trying to explain this to someone who doesn't even live, work or pay taxes here...Have a good day!
