Steinberg needs your coffin nails
NY Daily News ^ | August 11, 2004 | Michael Daley

Don't light up that cigarette. Send it to Joel Steinberg!

If you have any doubts, read the dire warning on the side of the pack. Who deserves that more, you or the man who beat little Lisa Steinberg to death?

Her killer is back among us and every decent soul in the city is sickened by the photos of him walking about at liberty.

Ah, but note one small detail: In the majority of the photos, Steinberg has a cigarette in hand. He may no longer be freebasing cocaine, but he is still puffing away at tobacco.

And this presents other cigarette smokers with an opportunity to fight evil while doing good, to give Joel another kick in the chest while helping yourself kick the habit.

Just cut out one of those photos of Steinberg smoking himself toward a heart attack, stroke or any number of horrific cancers.

Then, whenever you are struck by the urge to light up, look at that picture of Joel doing the same. You should then experience a superceding urge to mail the whole pack to him.

Keep Joel puffing! Spare your loved ones from watching you suffer a death so horrible even he almost doesn't deserve it! Any cigarette you smoke is one less coffin nail for the devil man!

The problem is where to send the cigarettes. The addresses of freed sex offenders are available to all on the Internet, searchable by name, county and ZIP code. But the whereabouts of the 3,000-plus freed killers in our midst is held to be confidential.

If you molest a kid, anyone needs only the first letter of your last name to get your address and photo. Beat a kid to death and you retain all your rights to privacy.

"By our rules and regulations," a spokeswoman for the New York State Division of Parole said yesterday.

The State of Florida has an online public database that offers the same information on all freed inmates that New York only makes available on sex offenders.

As more than 6 million visitors have discovered in the seven years the Florida site has been online, the database is searchable by crime as well as name.

It takes just a moment to get an alphabetical list of the 4,715 convicted murderers who have been freed in that state since 1997. Another 2,063 people convicted of manslaughter have been released, for a total of 6,778 killers.

If you are worried about a particular killer, you need only punch in the name. Presto! You get a photo, a physical description, including tattoos (i.e. CHAMPAGNE GLASS OUTER CALF) and past offenses. The site also furnishes the address at time of release.

Here in New York, the Department of Correctional Services "Inmate Look Up" database offers no photos and provides only scant details regarding the type of crime, place of incarceration and date of release.

No address is furnished. As a result, we only knew where Steinberg would be living upon his release because of leaks confirmed by a media car chase from the prison to the Fortune Society in Harlem.

He was bounced from there after an interview with New York magazine in which he continued to deny what the physical evidence makes as undeniable as the dangers of cigarettes such as he is smoking on the cover.

Some of those dangers are listed on the side of every pack, and unless you feel you are more deserving than Steinberg of such a fate, the only right thing to do is mail him the cigarettes.

There remains the problem of where to send them. Not even a database such as the one in Florida can give you the address of a killer who has moved on.

But not to worry. Word will reach the newspapers sooner or later and, meanwhile, you can send your cigarettes to:

KEEP SMOKING, JOEL! c/o Michael Daly Daily News 450 W. 33rd St. N.Y., N.Y. 10001

All cigarettes will be forwarded to Steinberg once his hiding place is known. Should you falter, remember a doctor's testimony regarding Steinberg's expression at the hospital while little Lisa was dying.

"He smiled," Dr. Patrick Kilhenny said during the trial. "It was a big grin."

Usually, I'd pass up the opportunity to read one of this plagiarizing putz's columns, but he's actually done a pretty good job here.

Definitely an improvement upon Mike Barnicle.

SEND KATHY BOUDIN TO CUBA!

-good times, G.J.P. (Jr.)

The problem with this is that Steinberg will probably be able to sue for harassment.

The underlying theme of anti-smokerism practically negates the true purpose of the article - that is to expose the need for criminal information systems such as that of Florida.

The sanctimony of these anti-smokers never ceases to amaze me.....

Spare your loved ones from watching you suffer a death so horrible even he almost doesn't deserve it!

Not to worry. The karma the Epitome of Evil's brought upon himself by killing an innocent child will be worse than lung cancer or any disease associate with smoking.

Gabz, I don't know about you, but I am more then sick of being lumped into the filthiest people on earth just because we choose to enjoy a legal commodity.

Those of us in Free Republic who smoke are Conservative; we are mothers, fathers and grandparents. We are Church goers.

We hold down jobs, pay our own health insurance and obey the laws.

Yet, just because we choose to enjoy cigarettes, our own kind still stab us in the back with articles like this, with no consideration of our feelings.

Hopefully, he'll enjoy a horrible, prolonged death.

We can all hope.

I have nothing against smokers. I just enjoy seeing an unwavering liberal show open hatred for Steinberg in the most powerful that way he can think of. I have seen a few quasi-sympathetic articles on the man in the past week.

I wish Stencrap a long, long life, and that he lingers on and on with a horrible disease, preferably afflicting his private parts.

Agreed. When are we gonna start picking on fat people, who willingly engage in an unhealthy-yet-legal lifestyle and drive up insurance costs?

Well, I know this article is geared to a piece of crap, but I really take offense to being lumped in with this idiot.

I agree about appreciateing the open hatred for the slime ball - but his open hatred for smokers is totally uncalled for.

SheLion is correct in her assessment of how smokers are lumped together with the lowest of the low by people who do have something against smokers.

I have gotten pretty sick and tired of being likenecd to a murderer, child abuser, terrorist, etc.............and it has happened many a time of FR.

Being compared to Joel Steinberg is the last straw.

What the hell is wrong with these people?
