I will concede - as did men like Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson - that the South should have freed the slaves before resorting to secession.

Great...except that neither Robert Lee nor Thomas Jackson ever conceded anything like that.

#1 I owe you no apology for expressing my opinion openly and honestly.

#2 You do owe me an apology (which I don't expect to get) for your accusations about my character.

#3 Your military service never entered into it and it doesn't entitle you to anything special in terms of your views being better than anyone elses. You're an American (I assume) and that's enough.

#4 The CSA didn't threaten the US Government, so it was not an insurrection. They exercised their RIGHT to secede from the Union and tried to do so peacefully. They did not violate the Constitution in any way, shape, or form because once they seceded they were no longer subject to it.

And you took that quote out of context. You were trying to claim that I was pulling some troll stunt.

YOU stand corrected.

Now be mature and let it go.

Good tips.

Don't bash Bush.

Don't be a Bushbot. I am probably the only freeper that thinks the guest worker plan has some merit.

Don't tout Kerry's greatness.

Don't feed the troll zombies. Darksheare and I own several of those.

If a Freeper with more than 1 year at FR calls you on something, make sure you said what you meant. Lack of facial expression and voice inflection make the internet a dangerous place.

Last if you get beat up ping me I'll help you if it makes sense.

Coming to FR is like an LEGAL immigrant coming to American. We have a culture and you are welcome to find your place in it. Just don't try to make us change. We are old and cranky and own guns.

I have to come to the reality that the Civil War was uncalled for.

I agree. Lincoln shouldn't have started it.

I have always suspected that hating Lincoln was a religion to you people; now I know it for certain.

Intergenerational emasculation.

Is Old Sarge a moderator or something?

If so, then he should be wise enough that he was being responded to in the context of his postings as he was not presenting himself as an "official" of this site.

I respect him for his service, but he played that card without warrant.

However, that doesn't mean secession wasn't within their rights as free and independent states.

Lincoln himself spoke of the right of political communities to secede when they were repressed.

There is no Constitutional right to secede in the same sense that there is no Constitutional right to enjoy vanilla ice cream: it is a situation about which the Constitution is silent.

There is, as Lincoln postulated, a moral, extraConstitutional right to secede.

However, the only material issue over which it was impossible to permanently compromise was not so much slavery as the expansion of slavery.

The Founding Fathers knew this, which is one of the reasons why the Constitution abolished the slave trade.

Absent the expansion of slavery, there was no matter of contention between North and South powerful enough to inspire a permanent separation - the nullification controversy proved that even the tariff was negotiable.

The Constitution says you're wrong.

Grow up yourself and move out of the past - your precious Dixie lost its illegal war, and their leaders were insurrectionists.

My military service compels me to thanklessly defend the rights you and others so blithely wave in my face. I have to walk on eggshells every deployment, because of people like you who whine about illegalities and past wrongs.

You are in no position to judge me, and I am in every position to judge you.

And you have been found wanting.

Hey Old Sarge,

Just curous, how do (US Constitution, Art. I, Sect. 8, clause 15), and (Art.I, Sect. 10, Clauses 1 and 3) refer to secession? I see guidelines for commerce and national defense (insurrection and invasion having the express purpose of supplanting the present government). The southern states wanted out of an agreement and believed they had the right to make that choice.

This is not intended to bring forth the dragon, although Skooz is pretty flamed out about now. I was under the impression that secession was not directly addressed in the constitution, but implied by the declaration of independence.

Semper Fi,
Pete

And your attitude is a disgrace to our armed forces Mr. "old Sarge" Kerry.

You read what you want to read like a liberal. I've been very clear that I am an AMERICAN and that this is an intellectual debate (why you joined in is beyond me).

The Constitution backs me up completely. But like uncloseted liberals, you want to spin it to say what you want it to say and get judges to imagine the rest. Big supporter of Roe vs. Wade, aren't you?

What you really are, I cannot say because the rules prevent profanity, but think Democrat mascot and you'd be about right. If you walk on eggshells, it is probably because you're afraid of being shot by your troops who are loyal to America -- not anything I've said.

You accuse me, child, of things that I've never done and you must be tranferring your own personal thoughts to me. I've whined about not one thing today, only pointing out historical fact. But you broadbrush paint me as being something that I am not.

I am in a position to judge you, because of the words you post here. I don't judge your military record, except when you flaunt it here like Mr. Kerry does. Real heroes don't need to brag about it. Real heroes are comfortable with themselves as they are.

If I've been found wanting by a closeted liberal like yourself, then fine. That's a mark of honor I would share with my conservative, patriotic brethren.

What's scary is that you are issued a gun and know how to use it. But that brain of yours is gathering dust.

Good day to you sir.
