AMEN, brother-- but I you gotta add Reagan to the list. ;) Taking down the evil empire was no mean feat, it required real political courage, and the end was not fore-ordained.

In which part of the Constitution can you read about the right to secede? Wrong document. Check the "Declaration of Independence."
Based on that document, there is indeed a fundamental human right to dissolve the bonds that bind a people to an unjust government. Whether or not the confederacy accurately represents such a case is open to question; but the existence of the principle itself is not.
Or would you say that the Declaration is erroneous on that point?

Lincoln conquered the state I live in and forced it into the USA 100 years before I was born. Thanks Abe! I believe it was Sherman...
Besides being a southerner, A Virginia Gentleman if you prefer, Virginia kept its soveriegnty by maintaining a Commonwealth status. But by Far, I am Christian then I am an American, then I am a Virginian...
You, sir, if that is what you are, need to get back to the reality. Lincoln was right, Davis was wrong...and it had nothing to do with might.
To: Skooz
If Lincoln had not fought back after South Carolina fired on American troops, the North American continent would consist of a powerful, but greatly weakened USA to the north, and a backwater, third word, banana republic to the south. I respectfully submit that that is a best-case scenario. I think it more likely that more states would try to secede from both the USA and the CSA, for any reason or no reason, and the end result would a myriad of small nation-states, many of them dictatorships or worse, always on the verge of war. That was Europe at the time of the Civil War, and that was what Lincoln sought to avoid.

I'm trying to calm everyone down. This is a picture of my dog making a Kerry. Is this funny?
Is this funny?
Is this funny?
Kerry Lies
War Criminal or War Hero,
See both you cannot be.
You claimed you burned a village,
Sounds like a crime to me.
Cambodia in Sixty-Eight,
You say that you were there.
You said Nixon said you werent,
Just why would Nixon care?
He wasnt even president,
Till Nineteen Sixty-Nine.
But details never bother you,
Bold lies do suit you fine.
Three Purple Hearts for paper cuts,
A Bronze and Silver Star.
Then home you came, threw them away,
But look now, there they are.
You testified with still more lies,
About brave fighting men.
The things you claimed that they did,
Just arent true now or then.
So tell us please John Kerry,
Which lie we should believe.
Oh what a tangled web youve weaved,
You practice to deceive.

Your post was going so well until you added "Lincoln was right, Davis was wrong". There you blew it.
And yes, I am a "sir"

Here's what you fail to grasp. What you fail to grasp is that I understand both sides of the argument quite well.
The seceding states had no Constitutional warrant to secede and Lincoln had no Constitutional warrant to levy armies against them.
But, as I've said above, the Constitution could not be drafted to cover every possible eventuality.
There was no law that covered that situation.

"Puerto Rico and other terroritories might become states in the future."
I meant "territories". Yes...but "terroritories" is a magnificent coinage. I'd use it for places like Mindanao, or Kashmir.

I have nothing to get over. I didn't fight the war. I would have been on the North's side.

It's from George Washington's farewell to the country. If only we as a nation had followed more of his advice more closely we'd be a lot better off.

to you I blew it...Had the south won, Virginia would not be as productive today. The resources from georgia and the carolinas would be worthless because nobody would trade! The confederacy couldn't work in a changing time. A unified body has to be UNIFIED. The north would grudginly do commerce with europe and england before the southern states. Look at the reconstruction period, there was much resentment, even after preservation of the union.
Don't tell me Lee didn't argue with Davis over the confederacy. Davis was a radical.
