Norton or MacAfee?
Little House on Unaka | August 10, 2004 | don-o

I have two new Dell boxes - one came with Noron and one with MacAfee,

90 day trial over.

Which one do I buy? I have run both in the past, but I need help here.

McAfee had some software conflicts. I switched to Norton and have had no further problems.

Definitely Norton or AVG/Grisoft. Everyone I know with McAfee have been infected numerous times.

The Grisoft software does compare favorably with either of the two big dogs. I am an administrator for online education programs and our network guys even suggested Grisoft as a possible solution for staff and students to install if they didn't have any other AV software.

McAfee seems cleaner and leaner and leaves you alone 99% of the time. Norton likes to make sure you can see it.

Personally, Norton is a safe bet, but I like McAfee too. So take your pick.

I support 400 workstations at work (a member of a staff of five) and we use McAfee. I use Norton Internet Security (which includes, parental filters, anti-spam, anti-virus, and so forth) at home on two XP boxes. It's kind of a wash, I think.

In any case, be sure to subscribe to virus profile updates! ANY anti-virus software without FREQUENT profile updates is no protection at all.

Have had both at home and prefer McAfee, it does less strange and intrusive things to my system

I am leaning to McAfee, for that reason - and looking for the experts to show up and explain the differences.

Simple. If you use Outlook Express for email, get Norton. If you use Outlook, get Mcafee. If you don't use either, look for a virus scanner that will hoook into your email program and scan incoming and outgoing emails.

We have had trouble with Norton 'taking over' our machines. We've found it impossible to remove Norton from our machines.

Grisoft is very good, free and it grabs everything. It does not "invade" your pc like Norton and the others!! So many processes running never enough RAM with a Windows PC.

Norton or McAfee? Hmmm...

While Mcafee never fumbled the ball too much, Norton kept the cr@p out. I'll go with Norton.

The same goes for virus software.

Norton. Didn't bog down my system like MacAfee. Pretty good firewall as well.
