I am so angry that this book is published--that a publisher would dare to publish it--that for the first time in my life, I would consider burning books. I don't want to give this thing its own thread. I do want to state that I don't want to hear any more complaints about honest to goodness veterans who have a beef with Kerry, when this sedition is on sale for public perusal like an Emily Dickinson collection, and no one says boo.

A Note from the Publisher

Checkpoint is a work of fiction by acclaimed author Nicholson Baker, a novella that explores the peculiar angst many Americans are feeling right now about their country and their president. The book is set up as a conversation between two old high school buddies. One of them, in despair about the direction the country is going, is convinced he must kill the president; the other tries to talk him out of it.

Checkpoint is now on sale at Amazon as of August 10.

Cannot understand how it is that these words could not be uttered today, in public; without being arrested. And yet. . .we have a book; that literally is the equivalent of yelling 'fire'. . .
