Fla. Right to Life backs two for Senate

Washington, DC, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- In a blow to ex-GOP U.S. Rep. Bill McCollum, the Florida Right to Life Committee endorsed two of his opponents Monday in the upcoming GOP Senate primary.

The committee, the state affiliate of the politically influential National Right to Life Committee, gave its seal of approval to former U.S. Housing Secretary Mel Martinez and Florida House Speaker Johnnie Byrd, citing their commitment to protecting the sanctity of life.

In surveys of Florida GOP voters, McCollum, who ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 2000, Martinez and Byrd have consistently finished in the top three, with McCollum and Martinez battling for the lead.

Following the lead of the NRLC, which issued similar endorsements in June, the FRLC said it was withholding its backing from McCollum because he has changed his position on banning embryonic stem cell research, meaning he "is not considered to be 100 percent pro-life by (FRLC's) standards."

I am looking forward to the debates tonight. I think they chose a good time to have them. ..and sometimes you learn something new about a candidate when he is forced to defend his positions and participate in reasoned, logical debate.

PRO-LIFE BUMP........for MEL!

I believe that Mel Martinez is the candidate who can defeat Castor and attract more Cuban-American votes for BUSH!

When and where are they on? I have always really liked Johnny Byrd - he's a strong conservative - but Mel will bring in the Cuban vote. I'd like to see them both.

The debate airs at 7pm on NBC affiliates throughout Florida. The Orlando Sentinel said it will be delayed in the Panhandle though. I don't know where you are living, but you should plan on 7pm on NBC.

Mel has my vote, for more reasons than the pro-life issue. I just wish he was advertising more in the Miami area.
