Officials confirm assassination plot foiled
NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania - A foiled bombing and assassination plot was aimed to kill the president of this Arab-dominated West African nation as he left this weekend for France, ruling party officials in Mauritania said Tuesday.
President Maaoya Sid'Ahmed Ould Taya's government confirmed reports of Monday's alleged coup attempt for the first time, calling it an ``attempted coup d'etat'' in a brief dispatch on state media.
State radio and the state news agency mentioned the alleged plot only in passing, saying that a meeting Tuesday between Taya and an envoy from Gambia marked ``the first time he had been seen since Monday's attempted coup d'etat.'' The report did not elaborate.
