CAMEROON: CHRISTIANS THREATENED
- requesting prayer for Cameroon and West Africa

AUSTRALIA (ANS) -- Cameroon, which shares its entire porous western border with Nigeria, sits atop the same volatile ethnic/religious fault-line as Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Sudan. Fulani nomads, who arrived in Cameroon in the 16th Century, conquered the northern savannahs in the early 19th Century under the leadership of Mobido Adama. The indigenous forest peoples of Cameroon migrated south after the Fulani invasion.
Cameroon is Africa's most complex nation. Operation World reports it has more than 280 languages spoken and around 500 ethnic groups. Cameroon, which has a history of appalling corruption, is a secular state with full religious freedom. Though only 25% Muslim, it is a member of the Organisation of Islamic Conference and the Islamic Development Bank.
The socio-religious troubles of central/northern Nigeria appear to be spreading into northern Cameroon. Garoua, the capital of North Province, Cameroon, is only some 500 kilometres due east of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, which suffered serious religious violence in 2001 and again this year, and is now under
emergency rule.
Foreign Islamists ('outside agitators') infiltrating northern Cameroon are reported to have 'literally inundated [northern Cameroon] with fliers inciting Muslims towards a hatred of Christians'. The Islamists are urging Muslims to marry and convert young Christian girls, as well as drive Christians from the region by raising rents or refusing to rent property to them. According to Bishop Yves Steven of Extreme North Province, some Christians have already been forcibly evicted from their homes. Cameroonian Christian leaders, police and observers are very concerned the situation could deteriorate if the trouble-makers are not removed. The Cameroon government task-force formed to tackle the problem will need to be decisive and committed to prevent Cameroon descending into the chaos experienced just across the border in northern Nigeria.
It is well established that al Qaeda is active in West Africa. Reports confirm that al Qaeda has had a continuous presence in West Africa since 1998, and invested heavily in West African diamonds purchased in Liberia just before the 11 September 2001 terror attacks in USA. A recent document, prepared by prosecutors at Sierra Leone's special war crimes court, confirms that al Qaeda is 'very active' in rebel-held northern Ivory Coast. Islamists are clearly motivated and committed to bringing all of West Africa under Islam. Christians must be equally committed to praying for the Church in West Africa, which is a Church in the front-line of spiritual battle.
PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT:
an outpouring of the Holy Spirit will revive the churches of Cameroon (and all West Africa), so that they will be emboldened and effective with the gospel of salvation and transformation.
God will grant the government of Cameroon (especially President Paul Biya and Prime Minister Peter Mafany Musonge) wise judgment, a hatred of corruption, and a commitment to justice. (1 Timothy 2:1-4; Proverbs 21:1)
the foreign Islamist agitators will be evicted, their incitement - hateful teachings and tracts - will be removed, and peace will be promoted.
God will redeem this stressful, threatening situation for HIS purpose and glory: in the face of this threat, may the Cameroonian churches, especially their leaders, be motivated to love and unity, holiness, discipleship, mission and prayer.
'Sharp tongues are the swords they wield; bitter words are the arrows they aim. They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps. But God himself will shoot them down. Suddenly his arrows will pierce them. Their own words will be turned against them, destroying them. All who see it happening will shake their heads in scorn. Then everyone will stand in awe, proclaiming the mighty acts of God, realising all the amazing things he does.' (Psalm 64: excerpts)
