"I'm here as much to hear her as her husband!" said Caere Dunn, 53, a hypnotherapist from Prescott.
Her fans cited her intelligence, strength, generosity and international life as reasons she would be a good first lady.
Trudy Ehrhart, 41, a grant writer from Phoenix, was feeding a Rice Krispie treat to a white cockatiel on her shoulder as she waited for the rally to begin. "She says what's on her mind, she's honest, she's articulate, she's forthright. She's a good example of how women should be," she said. She said Heinz Kerry's multicultural background would help bring the world together.
"She's got a lot of spunk. I think she has a lot of resources at her fingertips and she uses them well," said Margot Truini, 44, a hydrologist at USGS.
Many of the Democrats gathered at Heritage Square agreed that Heinz Kerry puts her inherited wealth to good use.
"She sets an example for philanthropy," said Pam Miller, 46, of Flagstaff. "She doesn't ignore things just because she's rich."
Her diverse background was another reason people gave for admiring her.
"She has an interesting life history. She's gutsy. Being able to go from being the wife of a Republican senator to being the wife of a Democratic senator is pretty adaptable," said a Navy veteran from Chandler, who preferred to not give his name.
He said that by running large charities, Heinz Kerry has shown she has executive ability. "I don't think she's going to stay at home and decorate the White House," he added.
"She's intelligent and not afraid to speak her mind, and she's quietly behind a lot of good causes," said Matthew Cole, 33, a librarian from Phoenix. He said that because Heinz Kerry grew up under a dictatorship, she knows how to appreciate democracy.
Heinz Kerry said the same thing in a few more words in her speech.
"For someone coming from as far away as I do, for someone coming from a dictatorship, for someone whose father never voted until he was 71 years old and my mother until 63, for someone who marched in the late 50s against the Apartheid marches in South Africa, for someone who never planned even to come here -- and 40 years ago I did, and look at where I am," she said. "Only in America!"
Heinz Kerry began her speech by remembering another visit she had in Flagstaff this January. A little girl joined her on top of two barstools for 25 minutes while she was making a speech during her husband's primary campaign.
"I have such fond memories of that night in Flagstaff, and I'm so glad to be back," she said.
She also spoke about some of her husband's ideas for his presidency.
"He proposes that for every high school graduating senior who can go to college, can matriculate. That if they dedicate two years of their lives working in community service in their community, they will get four years of in-state free college education," she said.
Kerry's supporters cheered her forward role in the campaign and said that overall, she was an asset for Kerry.
"I think she has a valuable voice. I believe she can help get the women and other people involved. She can be caustic, which might hurt Kerry, but I hope it won't," said Meg Palevich, 31, a graduate student of paleontology at NAU. Phil Blommendahl, 59, a Flagstaff musician, had similar thoughts. "Because she's so spontaneous, some people might be taken aback at first," he said, but if they listen to what she has to say, "they will come to respect her.
Sort of like at the zoo? The crowd seems drawn to the misbehaving monkeys.
The story quotes 2 government employees and a charlatan - I am here to say they do not speak for me when they say all women should be like THK.
Crowds are drawn to train wrecks, too. Big deal
That is a series hugh step. What about the wives of those existing congressmen who switch party, of which there have been several since '94? Of course, those were mostly D to R, which is like going from the dark to the light so should be much easier.
Well of course. NOBODY is there to see John Kerry.
The Bush administration has to be totally miffed that the Prescott, Arizona chapter of Hypnotherapists for Bush is going for Kerry.
Headline could have said: MOTHS DRAWN TO FLAME
She speaks her mind! She's diverse! She's spontaneous! She's...possessed!
Yerz is better!
Terry Heinz-Kerry is mentally-ill, incontinent and incompetent. The lowlife, subhuman beeeaaaatch isn't fit to deal with reality, as she donates millions to The Enemy Within, who are actively trying to destroy America, with the lamestream media's help.
The Fifth Column liberals, socialists, communists is aggressively working to destroy America's morals, mores and values. Activist judges, the ACLU, NAALCP etc etc etc, are working the legal venues to distort, delay and destroy justice, in favor of their own perverted, demented, deviant liberal-demokkkRAT agenda.
Time to *cull the herd*.
Yes, there's that as well as the freak show aspect: how often do you get to see a real live billionaire in person??
Yeah....she's a flip-flopper just like that flop of a husband!
Wow. I know she's on the biggish side but she's not big enough to create her own gravitational pull is she?
Just what we need: a South African who thinks that federally enacted community service should compel the states to offer 4 years free tuition.
