The actual Quaan itself is not too bad. ( Though there are contradictions and there IS reason to speculate that Mohammed was bi-polar and not rational.
The real problem is with the Hadiths, which are a bunch of sensational commentary and gobbldy-gook added later by other "scholars", and a lot of that is very hateful and is used to justify the worst sort of behavior. And the fundies exploit it.
Since it's all sold as one package, and since many Muslims don't learn to read, and since many of their clerics want to foment mayhem, they only get what the clerics want them to hear.
