SAN DIEGO - The California Republican Party urged those attending this weekend's state convention to don their Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops for a gathering that would be "very fun and casual."
But most of the more than 800 activists attending the three-day gathering stuck to more formal attire and exuded a very serious attitude about improving the party's prospects in the state.
With public opinion polls showing President Bush and GOP Senate nominee Bill Jones trailing their Democratic opponents in California by double digits, some Republicans who celebrated Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger's election just 10 months ago are dismayed to see that - once again - the GOP is behind in the state.
"It's just depressing that our state is in such bad shape," Redding delegate Roberta Wright said. "I hope at some point, they (the voters) will see the light." Democrats have won the state in the last three presidential elections and hold all the statewide elected offices - except for the governorship. Wright and many others at the state convention planned to improve their party's prospects this year through political organizing, and hoped that would entice Bush to spend more time and money in the state.
"We have a virtual army of volunteers out there doing the work," Placer County Republican Party Chairman Ken Campbell said. "It's all under the radar."

that California Republican card shredded really good the other day at work...
Unless they work to overcome the voter registration deficit, Republicans won't win this this state in presidential elections or win control of statewide offices or the State Legislature any time soon.
