Bush: Raise (Immigration) Limit for Mexico
The Washington Times ^ | 08-07-2004 | Bill Sammon

Posted on 08/07/2004 2:27:23 PM PDT by NewRomeTacitus

President Bush yesterday called on Congress to increase the number of Mexican immigrants allowed into the United States.

"I support raising the quotas on certain population groups, like the Mexican nationals, on who can become a citizen. In order to solve the logjam for citizenship, Congress has got to raise the quotas."

Having long sought to grant legal status to illegal aliens from Mexico, the president said yesterday that the only way to enact his plan is to allocate more legal-immigration slots to Mexicans.

"The issue there is whether or not people automatically get to step in the front of the line when it comes to citizenship," he said. "I don't think they should. I think those who have been waiting in line to be a citizen ought to be allowed to keep that priority in line."

Mr. Bush did not explain how non-Mexican applicants for U.S. residency would keep their place in line if the quota for Mexican immigrants is enlarged. Nor did he quantify his proposed enlargement for Mexicans, who already far outnumber immigrants from every other nation.

The president's plan to relax immigration rules, which is unpopular among many conservatives, entails granting legal status to millions of Mexicans who break the law to enter the United States. Mr. Bush shuns the term "amnesty," preferring to call it the matching of "willing workers with willing employers."

"People ought to be allowed to be here legally to work. That's what I believe. This will help bring people out of the shadows of our society. This will help, kind of, legalize a system that takes place every day, without employers...or employees feeling like they're going to be arrested, subjected to fines," he added.

She made a definite statement

Her statement is true. No, there are no documents. The reality of this immigration free for all and open border nightmare is clear, and requires no political documentation. You are clearly grasping for any defense to this epic, nationwide lawlessness.

If her statement were true, there would be SOME documentation to back it up.

I understand your position; but it would be much better if you stuck to the facts. The situation is bad enough without having to lie about Bush's official position.

"Using your definition, every country in the world is xenophobic. "

The vast majority are. And their economies are suffering. Immigrants built this nation and they are still necessary for our continued expansion.

There's plenty of room and resources in America for the current flow of immigrants. They find jobs as fast as they can get here.

Life just keeps getting better as our living standard continues to rise. A rising tide lifts all boats. Why kill the goose that is laying the golden egg.

You hate this country. You hate the lifetime of struggle that LEGAL immigrants have had to make it in this country. You have no regard for your fellow Americans, esp. those who came to this country and did it the right way, some waiting YEARS for their papers. You are a piece of illegal loving filth, and I don't care if I get banned saying so. This conversation is over.

Don't waste your time on trolls who brag about hiring illegal aliens for a fraction of what it costs to hire American citizens.

Somebody here put it very simply the other night: Privatize profits; socialize costs.

A lot of Congressmen, especially in border states such as AZ and TX are adamantly opposed to illegals and have received tons of complaints from their constituents.

That is not quite true, three of Arizona's eight congressmen are pro open boarders, two are promoting a guest worker program that would in the end result in amnesty, the other three are silent on the immigration issue. Senator McCain is promoting a guestworker/amnesty program, and Senator Kyl is silent.

Your next shipment of exploitable illegal labor has run into weather delays.

And they still have to get past me and the Border Patrol.

Those are the Huachuca Mountains just north of the border. They were named by the Chiricahua Apaches; it means Place of Thunder.

A few miles directly behind me when I took this picture (from my front porch) is the the remains of the only presidio ever attempted in these parts. The Chiricahuas immediately declared it a sport hunting preserve and enjoyed it like an out-in-the-boonies Disneyland -- Geronimo's grandson filled me in on that piece of local history before he died. The few survivors beat feet back to Mexico as fast as they could and never returned until the gringos had the Injun problem sorted out. When they finally returned, there were far more Chinese here than Mexicans.

His immigration proposal (not yet even voted on by Congress) proposes that illegal aliens who *register* themselves with the federal government, register their American employers with the federal government, register their families and residence with the federal government, and pay a fine for being in the U.S. illegally, will in return get a "blue card" that permits them to remain in the U.S. legally for the next 3 years, provided that they remain gainfully employed, pay their taxes, and avoid any brushes with law enforcement.

Per that proposal, they have to return to their home countries after 3 years to ask for permission to obtain a blue card extension.

False. The Bush proposal, as it stands, not only doesn't require the Illegals to ever leave (and you know this full well) after three years, he hasn't even stated that there would be any waiting period for legalized Illegals to apply for green cards.

This proposal has been roundly criticized from all sides. La Raza hates it because it doesn't offer instant and full amnesty. Xenophobics hate it because it lets illegals profit from being here illegally in the first place.

"Xenophobics?" You're usually better than that.

But you are right in a sense, the Bush Amnesty "lets illegals profit from being here illegally in the first place," even though President Bush would deny it.

In my experience, however, when both the far left (i.e. La Raza) and far right (e.g. xenophobics) agree to hate the same proposal, then there is probably some common sense in the proposal in question.

There is a small problem... you have thoroughly misunderstood and misrepresented this debate as being between extremes. President Bush is not in the middle, he is in the thoroughly unpopular extreme of Amnesty for Illegal Aliens. The mainstream of America opposes Amnesty, as does the majority of posters on Free Republic, and that leaves you and President Bush on the pro-Amnesty fringe.

Frankly, getting 8 million currently illegal and anonymous aliens to come in from the cold to identify themselves and register with the federal government sounds like a great first step towards being able to control our illegal immigration problem.

In general, you want to first *register* everything that you would later ban. Certainly the gun banners want to do this to us with our firearms. Well, we can use the same trick against illegal immigration.

Bunk. Enforce the laws on the books, and Illegals will begin self-deportation.

...And that's Bush's immigration plan. Convince anonymous illegals to register with the government, pay a fine in some massive plea bargain, and then compel them to return back to their home countries to apply for any further extentions.

You are flagrantly disregarding the facts. The Bush Amnesty does no such thing. Illegals that Bush refuses to deport now will never have to leave, and there is no requirement in his proposal that they do so. His false guest worker program is a Stage One Amnesty, and the proof of that is that he wants to up the immigration quotas for Mexicans.

Do the math: the purpose of the bigger quota is so that the Illegals will stay.

The other key in Bush's immigration plan is that *new* illegal aliens who arrive after this plan becomes law are *not* eligible for the blue card unless they return to their home country to apply

That's treacle for the gullible.

The Illegals don't have to leave, you have no source for that repeated misrepresntation of the facts.

In addition, you are trumpeting yet another false promise that in the future there will be a crackdown if we give President Bush the Amnesty that he's desired all along. Bush will be out of office before such a crackdown would ever have to occur, and we will be inundated with millions more Illegals as a result of this foolhardy Bush Amnesty, if it passes, and the next malfeasant President will come along and propose that the solution to his inaction will be to make the Illegal Aliens legal, again.

No doubt that such common sense immigration reform will be mischaracterized as a blanket amnesty, though. Sigh...

The only people whot talk about "blanket Amnesty" are the apologists for any Amnesty President Bush ever proposes. It's a red herring. There is never "blanket Amnesty.

Not in the Bush Amnesty, the Kerry Amnesty, the Clinton Amnesty, nor the Reagan Amnesty. Every Amnesty has Illegals that would not qualify.

To say an Amnesty isn't a blanket Amnesty is to damn it with ephemeral praise. It's still an Amnesty.

Anyone defending President Bush's pro-Illegal Alien policies has been wrong at every step in understanding his intentions. Time after time they have trotted out the "no blanket Amnesty" smoke and mirrors game, trying to pretend to themselves that he wouldn''t do what many of us have warned all along.

They were wrong, and you are wrong.

President George W. Bush is the most pro-Illegal Alien President this country has ever had.

Is there any such thing as a 'National Petition' to
put a stop to this or is it a state by state deal
and would take 10 years?
