The Year, 1994:

"The continental air defense evolved during the Cold War to detect and intercept Soviet bombers attacking North America via the North Pole. GAO concludes that such an air defense is no longer needed and could be disbanded at an annual savings of as much as $370 million. Other reserve and active units are well equipped to handle what has become the defense force's current focus--intercepting drug smugglers. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff recommended that

(1) the continental air defense be performed by dual tasking active and reserve general-purpose fighter and training squadrons in the Air Force, the Navy, and the Marine Corps and

(2) the number of Air National Guard units assigned to this mission be sharply reduced or eliminated.

The Secretary of Defense's guidance and the Air Force's plan, however, accomplish only part of what was envisioned by the Chairman, allowing the Air National Guard to retain an excessive force structure and incur the associated operating and support costs."

This Should be in the 09/11/01 report if it is not. Why, it shows the deplorable thinking of saving an annual $370 million in place of the U.S.'s Air Defense.

"The continental air defense evolved during the Cold War..."

First called "CONAD", CONtinental Air Defense, it was later renamed NORAD; North American Air Defense Command, when the Canadians joined. I served in Norad until 1975. ICBM's made what defenses it had, fighters and SAM missiles, obsolete. Nixon signed the ABM treaty with the USSR and stopped any meaningful air defense programs in the US. This began the concept known as MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction. Air National Guard units were kept at the pleasure of the air Force and as a flying club. That's not meant to denigrate the ANG's personal, but as a serious air defense system, Air Guard units are woefully inadequate, as was demonstrated on 9/11.

The fact is, we have no air defense. The ANG, like your local police department, can only react to the scene of the crime. Not prevent the damage and death. The USA is naked to the sky.

What aggravates me even more are the Democrats like Evan Bayh, Joseph Lieberman, et. al., who do seem to have a shred of common sense and yet allow themselves to be used by the Democratic Party to further the interests of the most radically socialist, anti-American segment of this nation's population.

During George W Bush's service with the Air National Guard (which John Kerry and his gang have been attacking for years now) he was part of Continental Air Defense. Given what we know about both the cold war going on at the time and what happened on 9/11/01 he was in an active duty situation not that different from John F'n Kerry.

BTW, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs in '94 was Clinton's favorite general, Gen. John Shalikashvili,......of whom I am sure you are aware. (sigh)
