Stray American cat 'found wandering in Oxford'

A stray cat that was wandering the streets of Oxford was found to have been registered in the USA when rescuers did a microchip scan on it.

The RSPCA says it has no idea how the cat, nicknamed Jasper, got to Britain, says BBC Online.

And it has been unable to trace Jasper's owners in the USA.

It is now hoping someone will recognise the animal, which was found in Campbell Road in the city.

RSPCA inspector Doug Davidson said Jasper was friendly and 'a good ambassador for the USA'.

He said he had three theories on how he managed to get across the Atlantic.

"The first is that he's a strong swimmer, the second is that he belongs to Americans living in Oxford and the third would be that it was a British family in the USA who adopted him and then brought him back," he said.

Jasper is being looked after at the Firs Cattery in Farmoor until his owners can be traced.

Seems like an awful lot of expense and trouble over a cat.

That looks EXACTLY like my cat! Maine Coons are the best cats in the world. Everyone I have ever met is the coolest cat! I hope he finds a good home if they cannot find his owners.

The Roaming Gnome lost his pet - I'm sure this is it.

My sister told me about a friend who had a Maine Coon. She described it as a very large cat and told me that the owner claimed that it had actually stalked deer and chased them. I have a newfound respect and appreciation for cats, but I find this a little hard to believe. Care to comment please?

I'm betting on the "strong swimmer" option...

"The Roaming Gnome's new radio commercial reveals he is gay."

Why must we be subjected to this? (no need to answer -rhetorical)

Kool Kat.

I've only seen 2 Maine Coons in person, at cat shows, and they were that big.

My parents had a maine coon. When you threw a stick out, the cat went and fetched it and brought it back, and was playful until old age. The cat at parties with 50 folks around, would lay on its back in the center of the room, or just move from lap to lap. The cat always gravitated to where the action was. Of course, the cat slept with me. :)

Cats will stalk anything from a safe distance. My parent's cats like to stalk this ostrich like bird (the thing was about 5 feet high) that was a pet of the neighbors, and would sometimes jump the fence - from a safe distance.
