Al-Qaida suspect was secretly cooperating with counterrorist sting

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - The al-Qaida suspect named by U.S. officials as the source of information that led to this week’s terrorist alerts was working undercover, Pakistani intelligence sources said Friday, putting an end to the sting operation and forcing Pakistan to hide the man in a secret location.

Under pressure to justify the alerts in three Northeastern cities, U.S. officials confirmed a report by The New York Times that the man, Mohammad Naeem Noor Khan, was the source of the intelligence that led to the decision.

A Pakistani intelligence source told Reuters on Friday that Khan, who was arrested in Lahore secretly last month, had been actively cooperating with intelligence agents to help catch al-Qaida operatives when his name appeared in U.S. newspapers.

This is a result of the "everything is everyones business" mentality that our whole society has now days. We give up so much valuble future information because the media feels they have to have the info right now.

It could be that, or it could be another instance of the LSM "giving aid and comfort" to the enemy. They certainly made things easier for AQ with this story.

The Times published a story Monday saying U.S. officials had disclosed that a man arrested in Pakistan was the source of the bulk of information leading to the security alerts. The Times identified him as Khan, although it did not say how it had learned his name.

U.S. officials subsequently confirmed the name to other news organizations Monday morning. None of the reports mentioned that Khan was working under cover at the time, helping to catch al-Qaida suspects.

Hehe. it seems the entire al qaeda network, works as informants and operatives for the govts of pakistan, iran and saudi arabia.

There is a lot of truth in what the paki officials said. It must have come straight from the heart, without the official really realizing what he was saying.

here are some of the other al qaeda operatives who were given amnesty by the pakis.

Pakistan granted amnesty on Saturday to five tribal elders accused of harboring Al Qaeda fugitives, and gave foreigners in a lawless region near the Afghan border until April 30 to surrender or face military action, officials said.

Authorities also agreed to release on Sunday 50 tribesmen arrested in a bloody Pakistani army operation in South Waziristan (search) last month,

If we ever have another civil war, journalists won't just be reporting it; they'll be tagets.

Consider that the USG got tired of Paki inspired double games and their promises, and decided to force the issue by outing this guy, and stop Paki led triple XXX games with double agents...

Just a thought. Shadow wars and all....

Well, it sounds like there's blame enough to go around.
The U.S. official who confirmed the report could have kept his mouth shut, too. And how much of this is Pakistan's fault?

"Anonymous intelligence officials", no doubt.

Yet another damaging leak. Meant to damage...who?

Let's hope that Fitzgerald's grand jury is addressing this kind of activity.

What about the traitors "U.S. Officials" that tipped off the NY Times? Off with their heads.

the leak could have been made to make the terror alerts look good, and not based on old information.

Will we get an investigtion into the New York times leak?
