Keyes' supporters rallied in front of the Union League Club Wednesday afternoon to meet Alan Keyes as he arrived for an interview with the IL GOP. |
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS -- Republicans from all over the state are expected to converge in Arlington Heights this Sunday to see Ambassador Alan Keyes accept the State Central Committee's tap as their U.S. Senate candidate for the 2004 campaign.
A skeleton campaign staff is being put together now, and arrangement for Keyes to step into the wild world of Illinois politics is in motion.
"Supporters of Ambassador Keyes are encouraged to come to a rally Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Wellington Restaurant, 2121 South Arlington Heights Road in the northwestern suburb of Arlington Heights," the campaign said on Friday.
While the Chicago media has been speculating that Keyes will not accept the offer to challenge Democratic candidate Barack Obama for the U.S. Senate slot, IL GOP state central committeemen have been saying since Wednesday that Keyes is indeed coming, he only needed a few days to get his campaign staff lined up and get personal details in place before formally accepting the bid.
Editorials condemning the Republican party's choice of Keyes were prominent in Chicago papers on Friday, but Keyes supporters throughout the state say they are planning to welcome their candidate Sunday afternoon, the campaign said today.
One paper ridiculed the number of Keyes supporters that met him at the Union League Club on Wednesday, suggesting that few people support a Keyes' candidacy. Barack Obama has been met by crowds numbering in the hundreds since his national exposure at the Democratic National Convention last week.
But all that doesn't seem to faze those who encouraged Keyes to come to Illinois and run for U.S. Senate.
"The Republican base is energized with this candidacy," State Senator Dave Syverson, the member of the state central committee with the most weighted vote, said this week. "There's less than 90 days until the election. We're counting on the base now."
WHAT: Welcoming Rally for Ambassador Alan Keyes
WHERE: Wellington Restaurant, 2121 South Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL
WHEN: Sunday, August 8, 2004 at 2:00 PM
Why?
Because I refuse to play pretend with you girls?
Reality is reality, and ignoring reality is for losers.
"Wants"?
Go ahead, you stop it from happening.
Here's the reference in question.
Note, please, the heading, which for ease of reading I will reproduce below:

Note also the presence of a definition and the absence of synonyms.
Now this leads us to a question: should you keep posting in the hope of eventually getting something right, or should you just stop digging? (Yes, I am aware that you probably aren't holding a shovel right not. It's those idioms again.)
but don't let the "English as a second language" kid correct you on the use of OUR language.
I wasn't planning on it, but thanks for the admonition.
You may recall that I corrected your misapprehension of Keyes' usage.
You consulted a dictionary on an entire phrase?
dic·tion·ar·y Listen: [ dksh-nr ]
n. pl. dic·tion·ar·ies
A dictionary defines words, not phrases...see, now you can walk away knowing that you learned something new tonight.
No charge.
Actually I consulted Google, which lead me to the dictionary, but no matter.
A dictionary defines words, not phrases...see, now you can walk away knowing that you learned something new tonight.
So lemme get this straight. You take the definition's reference to words to positively exclude phrases, therefore making anything including definitions of phrases other than a real dictionary. Slight problem: if you really believe that, the dictionary you just quoted isn't a real dictionary, since it also defines phrases.
Now dictionary.com got the definition you cited from the American Heritage. I have a copy on my desk. I opened it at random, and on one page I see definitions for: jump bid, jumper cable, jumping bean, jumping jack, jumping mouse, jumping-off place, jump seat, junction box, June beetle, Jung Carl Gustav, jungle fever, jungle fowl, jungle gym, junior collage, junior high school, and junior varsity.
So it seems that by your weird interpretation, the definition you cited is itself from a fake dictionary!
And even aside from that, "not a real dictionary" does not equal "a thesaurus", leaving that egg firmly on your face (this is also an idiom, so don't bother telling me the state of your literal face).
And even aside from that, it's firmly established that you bungled the meaning of "err on the side of _______", and therefor the meaning of Keyes' remarks, leaving the original egg still on your forehead.
Luis Gonzalez's harping on Keyes is really unbelievable. When the GOP decides to endorse a candidate, for the good of the Party, Republicans ought to rally around the candidate in support. Illinois Republicans want Alan Keyes as their candidate; after the disenchantment caused by the Ryans and other watered-down Republicans, they want someone they can actually believe in again. That man is Alan Keyes and the Republican leadership in Illinois listened to the voices of Republican voters.
I was at the Keyes rally today in Arlington Heights and can assure you that the GOP actually severely underestimated the actual amount of people expected to show up at the acceptance speech. Easily, several hundred people were there and by the time the actual acceptance speech started, people had to line up outside the doors of the Wellington, because the place was filled up past capacity. The Republican voters in Illinois are thrilled that such a prolific speaker and true visionary was called upon to challenge Obama. The crowd was enthusiastic and supportive. The debates between Keyes and Obama will be heard not only throughout the state of Illinois, but throughout the entire nation. This election is truly one of ideas and will be remembered in history, as the Lincoln-Doulgas debates are.
Alan Keyes was personally asked by Republican leadership in Illinois to run against Obama. No one asked Hillary--she basically cherry-picked a state where she would actually be able to win. Keyes didn't come looking for the nomination, but was practically begged by Illinois GOP leaders to run. After Alan Keyes actually looked at Obama's record, challenging him wasn't just a choice, but as he stated, "an obligation."
I was also there, and concur with your take.
Good report, and I think you have the view that is held by the vast majority of Illinois Republicans.
The trash-talking Keyes-haters here will fail miserably in their attempt to pull Alan down to their level.
The Dems are scared. Liberals in general are scared.
They sense that they have a real race on their hands.
Peter Fitzgerald pointed out that when he ran for the Senate, he didn't have a fraction of the people, or anywhere near the kind of excitement that Dr. Keyes is already generating.
This is looking real, real good.
You must not have studied Obama throughout his political career. He will debate Alan Keyes; his pride would lead him to no other end and Illinois voters will expect no less.
That is great to hear; I am glad that I made the trip down to Arlington Heights too, although the banquet hall was too stifling warm.
The safe money's on him being a troll...
