Republicans' Dishonorable Charge (FR/ FRN mention: CONASON ALERT)
Salon ^ | 8/5/2004 | Joe Conason

Posted on 08/06/2004 7:16:23 AM PDT by diotima

"Dishonest and dishonorable" is how John McCain described the attack ad now appearing on television in several swing states, courtesy of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Dishonest because the men who appear in the ad make false claims about John Kerry's wartime conduct and decorations. Dishonorable because these men have waited three decades to publicize their slurs, with partisan motives, during a presidential campaign.

**********SNIP SNIP SNIP********************

The hired help employed by the Swift Vets committee is thoroughly partisan, too. Aside from Spaeth and Thomas Rupprath, the private detective she recommended to provide research services, the group's IRS filing names several experienced Washington political operatives. The June 30 filing shows payments to Robert A. Hahn, a right-wing Internet activist and Web designer who also runs something called the Free Republic Network (apparently an affiliate of the extremist Free Republic Web site); and to Tom Wyld, a Navy veteran and former director of public relations for the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, the lobbying arm of the National Rifle Association.

The White House has deniability, to be sure, if charged with complicity in this campaign. The question is whether its deniability is plausible -- or risible.

As for the accuracy of the Republican veterans' accusations, they can be tested against the testimony of the men who served under Kerry's command -- all of whom but one have repeatedly endorsed his courage, his decency, and his candidacy. Denigration of Kerry's record should also be measured against the sterling evaluations that he received during the actual time of his service, including by Adm. Roy Hoffman, who now chairs the Swift Boat Veterans group.

No doubt the Republicans hope that attacking Kerry will distract from important issues they would prefer not to discuss or debate. But their campaign is backfiring, as drawing fresh attention to Vietnam does not flatter the candidate who avoided service there.

Kerry only served four months-- got dubious Purple Hearts

Isn't that amazing? FOUR MONTHS! And he won't shut up about it.

I'm surprised he doesn't have Theresa market a John Kerry doll. Pull the string and - " I served in Viet Nam.....I served in Viet Nam.....I served in Viet Nam.....I served in Viet Nam.....

"My name is Steve Gardner. I served in 1966 and 1967 on my first tour of duty in Vietnam on Swift boats, and I did my second tour in '68 and '69, involved with John Kerry in the last 2 1/2 months of my tour. The John Kerry that I know is not the John Kerry that everybody else is portraying. I served alongside him and behind him, five feet away from him in a gun tub, and watched as he made indecisive moves with our boat, put our boats in jeopardy, put our crews in jeopardy... if a man like that can't handle that 6-man crew boat, how can you expect him to be our Commander-in-Chief?"
-- Steven Gardner

The above quote was from a press conference given at the National Press Club in Washington on May 4, 2004. You may view Steven’s comments at the following web site. Just scroll down to Steven’s picture and click on it.

http://www.swiftvets.com/index.php?topic=SwiftVetQuotes

Searching through that web site, you will find 250 men who served on Swift boats, including the entire chain of command above Lt. Kerry, agree with Steven Gardner that Kerry is not fit to be Commander-in-Chief. That compares to the 13 crew members who support his candidacy.

It is A-freaking-mazing!!

I'm not at all shocked by the Swift Boat revelations. Kerry's endless exploitation of Nam should have tippewd us all off to the fact that it was a big lie.

When you did it, you don't have to to TALK ABOUT IT.

Kerry's been exposed. And I am thrilled that the Vets he hurt so badly are getting their day in the court of public opinion. I hope they stand their ground under the relentless fire from the partisan liberal media.

Golly gee whiz!

I'm an EXTREMIST!

That's cool. Do we get tee shirts or baseball caps or somethin like that now? I don't want to wear ribbons though. I hate that. Does this mean I have to stop taking showers?

Well, to get into the mood of being an extremist, I will now:

- refer to my half acre suburban Connecticut lot as "the compound"
- my four bedroom Colonial home will now be "the facilities"
- my wife and five kids will now be known as "the members"
- my 1995 Ford Escort will be know as "the vehicle"

um, carry on men! Right on! um, Whip it good! (darn it all, that didn't really sound extreme, did it? Well, I'm new at this, I'll do better).

As I posted on an earlier thread;
No matter what you think about swiftvets (truth or right-wing hit job), you just can't avoid the fact that John Kerry made this bed with his own hands. Months ago he PERSONALLY joined the chorus of "Bush hasn't proven he wasn't AWOL" crap. And with the convention, he made Vietnam THE centerpiece of his campaign. So, per Kerry himself, Vietnam is EVERYTHING, and we should review records and nitpick like hell. So here we are.

I bet while ole Joe was pecking this out with one hand was giving George Soros a little wrap around with the other.

I fail to understand how whores like this get printed. Hell he might as well wear a blue dress and offer his services to the closest Rat around.

This guy has absolutely NO redeaming value as a political commentator if that is what he is trying to sell himself as.

These Veterans were slandered by Kerry when he returned, then spit on by the public when they returned. Now thirty years later the media wants to call them liars and silence them. They are in my prayers.
