Just as a side note, DFW is one of the few airports to maintained their common sense following Sept. 11th. They actually allow and encourage plane spotters/photographers and even have an area setup just for that purpose. Most other airports are happy to arrest people if they photograph airliners.

The bag was dropped off for required screening by a passenger, who then boarded a plane to Philadelphia, Mangana said.

“[The passenger] is currently on board the plane and does not know his luggage was detained,” Mangana said. “Officials will be in Philadelphia when they arrive for questioning.”

D/FW’s Mobile Command Post and bomb squad were called in for further investigation. A robot was used to remove the bag and place it into a containment vessel.

The vessel will be transported to a range on airport grounds for further investigation, Mangana said.

So let me get this straight.

This was a piece of luggage that was checked, i.e. not carry on luggage.

The guy proceeds to get on the plane.

But in running it through the scanners they find what appears to be a pipe bomb.

My question to those in the know because I'm really ignorant about explosives.

I'm supposing a pipe bomb in a cargo hold can take down a plane...right?

Depends on the size of the device. If it goes off in the cargo hold, there would be at the least, decompression. Moreso, panic.

The aircraft would have to make an emergency landing, thereby instant media attention - mission accimplished.

Every time I drop off a bag they make me wait til the bag clears the machine before I can head off to board my plane.

How could they let a guy with a pipe bomb in his bag board the plane and let the plane take off? Duh...

A relatively small tape recorder filled with plastic explosives took down a Pan Am 747 over Lockerbie. I'd guess that a pipe bomb could take out an airliner, too.

Something doesn't quite make sense here. Only carry on luggage is scanned? So a cargo plane with a bomb w/ timing device sits there during loading and the dude watches from the sky as an airport blows up??

I think it was a checked bag, which is loaded onto the plane after (or during) the passengers board. So he got on and his bag didn't make it because it was being checked. I'm a little surprised they let the plane leave if one of the bags supposed to be on that plane was held up for screening, though.

Dallas-Fort Worth terminal evacuated after suspicious device found

GRAPEVINE, Texas Several gates at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport have been evacuated after security officials found a suspicious device. Airport officials say the device resembles a pipe, with "wires and threaded caps." It was discovered in an American Airlines terminal during a routine Transportation Security Administration baggage screening. An airport spokesman says the bag was dropped off for screening by a passenger who later boarded a flight to Philadelphia. The passenger was to be questioned upon landing. A bomb disposal squad was called in to remove the device. It was going to be examined in an open field on airport property. The airport says some passengers may experience brief delays.

I once smuggled a lightsaber through DFW. It probably resembled a pipe, too.

Was that a 'Skin Deep' reference?
