The New York Police Department wasted a lot of time and taxpayer money with an absurd defense of its policy barring two Sikhs from wearing turbans while working as traffic agents. So reinstating the two men last week was a welcome if belated recognition of the obvious - that the NYPD dress code is no match for First Amendment rights.
Described by a Sikh adherent as "our first big civil rights victory in this country," the achievement didn't come easy. Police claimed for two years-plus that turbans and beards, both tenets of the Sikh religion, violated the dress policy. The more salient point was that constitutionally protected religious expression wouldn't compromise public safety in this case.
So rather than simply altering the policy in deference to the law, not to mention common sense, officials waited for one of the men, Amric Singh Rathour, to drag them into federal court on discrimination charges. Meanwhile, Jasjit Singh Jaggi's case made its way to the city's Commission on Human Rights, which recently ordered the NYPD to reinstate him. Mercifully, police officials decided not to appeal.

Correction accepted with a sheepish grin.
However, it doesn't change the underlying sentiment that it's maddening when even a police force, which must depend on discipline and uniformity for its effectiveness, has had to yield to these PC weaklings.
When they murder their own countries leader while protecting her, they were good until that.
How long before they kill someone because they don't
like their actions.
Are you calling the Sikhs PC weaklings? That's not something I would recommend saying to a Sikh......
That was a dispute that really has nothing to do with America. Name one instance where a Sikh has committed any type of act against the USA or its government.
Following your logic, we should exclude people of Irish descent from working as cops, based on all the problems in N. Ireland.
I figure, so long as we don't bomb their temple, we should have no problems with them.
Pretty soon it will be cross dressing male officers wearing skirts. Once the path is clear all hell breaks loose.
I understand that Sikhs are also required by their religion to carry a dagger called a kirpan. Will NYPD regulations permit this also?
Hold on a sec. There is no terrorist activity in The Irish Republic. Northern Ireland is part of Great Britan, not Ireland. Unless Northern Ireland is unjustly occupied by the British, your statement would be more correct by saying "exclude all people of British descent." Personally, I have no opinion on the NI issue, but I find the stange PC lumping of the Irish into the ranks of the terrorists unjust. I know you are defending the sikhs, but leave the Irish out of it.
Is he a Singh or a Synge?
I see you have no objections to holding Sikhs collectively responsible for the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Are you as willing to hold white Americans collectively responsible for the destruction of the so-called "Native American" cultures and of the slavery of African-Americans?
The terrorism that occurred in Northern Ireland was committed by members of the Irish ethnic group. My statement stands.
I find the stange PC lumping of the Irish into the ranks of the terrorists unjust.
Why? The Irish have committed more than their fair share of terrorism in the last century.
Alright now. I'm not going to get into a silly back and forth on this. I've accepted your correction and reasserted my view on the matter.
the PC weaklings I refer to are the NYPD brass, NY government bureaucrats, and whoever else caved to these demands.
I hope this is now clear enough.
Maybe like that?
Or like that?
Exactly-- Sikhs are historically very good warriors.
Why? They are NOT Muslims. Not Hindus either, they are Shiks.
I've seen that in other cities. They wear the cap device on the front of the turban.
What? You think NYPD officers don't carry knives now? The Kirpan is, or can be, purely ceremonial/symbolic blunted and dull. However these guys are going to be carrying Glocks, what's the harm in a discreetly carried dagger?
What does that have to do with them forcing the NYPD to cater to their dress code?
