Thank god for her. I wonder how she will help Bush. Will she work for the campaign in some official manner?

Great news all around.

With no disrespect intended toward the Bush campaign as it exists, they certainly do need Peggy Noonan's skill, and at a higher level than she modestly posits. You can't not need the political skills she possesses, whether in the form of speechwriting or sound bites.

I've long been a big fan of Ms. Noonan's writing, so I hope her fans will forgive me when I opine that lately she's become a little maudlin, a little self-absorbed, a little unfocused. I think it's because she was feeling a bit out of the loop. Today's column is excellent, vintage Noonan -- I think because of her enthusiasm for rejoining the battle.

Peggy is true blue, rock solid. By which I mean that she's honest, and that her actions are always in accord with her beliefs. Of course, she's also a wonderful writer. In her first book, "What I Saw at the Revolution", which was about her years as a speechwriter for Reagan, she mentions that the guys there used to refer to her as "the girl who does the poetry". For anyone who remembers the Challenger speech, that description won't be inapt.

Anyway, I don't always agree with her but I know we're on the same team, and I know that she's honest. That's enough. President Bush must be ecstatic!

I don't think the Bush campaign would be offended. And I'm sure Peggy didn't take her leave without some less than subtle hints that her talents would be welcomed. She will give them the elequence that has alluded the Kerry campaign, and to a large extent the Bush campaign. I'm ready for some style with my substance.

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

Proverbs 15:1-3

Ain't nobody who uses soft answers and knowledge as rightly as Peggy!

I am going to take three months' unpaid leave from The Wall Street Journal and attempt to support the Republican Party in the coming and crucial election. (Every four years everyone says "this is the most important election of my lifetime," but this year I believe it is true.)

As do I.

Welcome to the team, Ms. Noonan.

Great news for the campaign! How could you get a better speech writer? Gratis? No way! She's worth every bit whatever WSJ pays her.

...you and I are old; Old age hath yet his honor and his toil. Death closes all; but something ere the end, Some work of noble note, may yet be done, Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods...

Good move, Peggy. You were the best.

Peggy,

Write the speeches!

You are the best and you have a heart.

You are a great spokesperson, also. You will be invaluable and I for one thank you.
