Democratic Party funds diverted to Boston bank MONTGOMERY -- Perhaps as much as $200,000 in campaign donations made to the Alabama Democratic Party in August and September of 1999 were diverted to a Boston bank, according to people who have testified before a federal grand jury in Montgomery, are set to testify in the future, and others familiar with the matter. It's not clear from those interviewed who controlled the money at the time or why the donations weren't initially included on the party's donor records. The federal grand jury, which has been convening regularly at U.S. District Court since June, is known to be reviewing a host of activities that occurred when Don Siegelman was governor. They include a change in the way the state taxes hazardous waste and donations made to a foundation created by Siegelman to raise funds for the 1999 lottery referendum.
