Hm. I've alternatively been called Bushbot and Bush-basher, depending on which forum I'm using at the time. No matter how many logical arguments I make to support my case, there is a certain element who will label me one way or the other, depending on their own narrow mind, and whether I'm praising or criticizing a beloved/hated policy.

You obviously know NOTHING at all about Ill. politics nor the people who live there.

Some of THE stauncest Dem voters there, are Black Catholics.

When did either Reagan or Bush use the word "evil" to describe American citizens?

Are you actually arguing that they have not believed people can be evil?!? goodness, man, they are believers in the Bible and the Bible clearly teaches that men can be evil. It seems your real argument is with the Bible, not with me.

As a matter of fact, when did they use the term to describe anything other than a system of government, or a political ideology?

Just some philosophical background: non-personal things/entities are not evil (notwithstanding the leftist view if guns). Evil is predicated of moral agents (i.e., persons). So, even though we often speak abstractly of evil "governments". "political ideologies", etc., we are really referring to beliefs, actions, etc., of moral agents.

Reagan and Bush understand this.

I guess it just depends on the attachment that we have to particular elements of our respective cultures. Hot dogs? For me, as few as possible, except when the ambiance demands it.

People around here descend from Germanic and No. European roots. They take their sausages more seriously than people in the South and East (though PA has a lot of German influence). I'm from the Mid-Atlantic area originally also. You know what I miss? The subs (hoagies to you). There's nothing like them out here.

Keyes has to find some way to take 30% of the black vote and then appeal to white conservatives and Reagan democrats in the Chicago suburbs and downstate. He really has a lot of work to do. Just buy a bus and tour the state all the way until election day.

1.No one watches MSNBC.

In addition, MSNBC's marketing for the show sucked. They basically apologized for putting him on the air in their commercials. Yeah. Great way to gain viewers. Even so, he was slowly gaining marketshare until they told him they were going to bump him to a slot he did not agree to. They pulled out all the stops for the second coming of Donahue, though. He got an initial bump from all the hype, but quickly eroded to numbers far worse than AKIMS.

If Kerry loses Illinois, than he will be losing everything outside of New England, New York, DC, New York, and maybe Maryland and Hawaii.

I can speak for Maryland. We've elected a Republican governor in the first time in 30 years and the first thing he did was overhaul the voting machines. As Hugh Hewitt says, "If we win big, they can't cheat." For the first time in my life I doubt they'll cheat in Maryland.

In addition, black Demo party hack Clarence Mitchell IV openly supported Governor Ehrlich. The black vote is in play in Maryland and for the second time in my life my vote may actually count.

Mostly, I don't think Keyes is being criticized because of his conservatism.

What then?

Reagan and Bush do not consider their political enemies to be evil. RR was friends with many of his opponents and W is the same way.

They are smarter than you clearly, because they understand that calling your political opponents evil does nothing but turn people off from your message.

Carpetbagger - An outsider, especially a politician, who presumptuously seeks a position or success in a new locality.

Thanks for the definition. Keyes isn't "presumptuously seeking" anything. It was initiated entirely from the Illinois GOP State Central Committee, who desperately have asked him to run. Keyes therefore isn't a carpetbagger.

But even if you believe he is, the unwritten "rules" of gentlemanly campaigning have changed. I'd liken it to the trend in the NBA of drafting kids out of high school. No team likes the idea of drafting 18-year-old kids, but any team given the opportunity to draft a Kobe Bryant would be foolish to not seriously consider it. It's not the way things ideally should be done, but that's they way things are today.

Let's hope the drafting of Keyes pays off.

I don't agree with every single line item in the GOP platform, some GOP policies run contrary to my principles as whatever brand of conservative it is that I am.

So my political ideology is molded by the concessions I must make in order to support the Party.

Now, there are unshakable principles which will never be subject to concessions, regardless of the Party platform.

In the case of this thread, the overriding principle is that I can't behave like them, and consider myself different from them.

I'm not so sure there will be debates. I don't see what incentive Obama would have to accept a debate challenge, given his likely huge lead, and given Keyes's formidable debating reputation.

I don't think Obama can duck debates. He's already on the record. Check out this letter from Obama to previous candidate Jack Ryan, where he proposes a series of Lincoln-Douglas debates.

June 13, 2004

Mr. Jack Ryan

Dear Jack:

A century and a half ago, two Senate candidates from Illinois set an admirable standard for campaigning with a series of debates that captivated the attention of the entire nation.

While America today may not be facing the kind of fundamental issues that dominated the Lincoln-Douglas debates, we do face many great challenges, and how we meet them will define our future.

To do these issues justice, we owe the people of Illinois more than glib TV ads and rehearsed sound-bites. We owe them a serious, thoughtful discussion about where we would lead as their United States Senator.

That is why I am proposing a series of six debates across our state, including four outside the Chicago media market, so that voters throughout Illinois will have the chance to see and hear us offer our competing ideas and visions for the future.

Well now... Keyes has a shot to show whether he is for real, or just a Jesse Jackson for the right wing. I hope he succeeds.

That was a totally low-class thing to say. There is no comparison in the world between Je$$e Race-Bait Jackson and Alan Keyes. The only thing they have in common is skin color so it was really quite a racist thing to say.

Well I don't live in Chicago and I don't know all the black Catholics there like you apparently do --- in fact I don't know any of them --- although I have heard of Joseph Perry --- but I don't know how pro-life he is. I do know many blacks are anti-abortion and so are many black Catholics, maybe none of the ones in Chicago though.

Your posts are closer to the rambling of a nutjob, than to that of a thinking individual, they are the kind of garbage used to paint conservatives as fanatical idiots.

Luis, pleased refrain from the psychological projection...AND the personal insults in your dialogue with me.

It's not about being fair to someone else, it's about being consistent to our own morals.

Again, you have not even made an argument as to WHY it is inconsistent with our own moral values. I have clearly shown how it IS consistent with morality. The whole question before us is WHY would it be immoral for Keyes t move to Illinois to run for the Senate? Why does he have to be from Illinois?

If you justify behaving like someone whom you yourself describe as evil, BECAUSE they are evil, all you've accomplish is becoming evil yourself.

Straw man. We are NOT behaving like the evil men. Again, the move itself is a neutral. It's what the evil men want to DO with the neutral that is evil.

We don't have to be fair to EVIL.
