Ex-POWs: North Vietnamese Jailers Used Kerry's 'War Crimes' Speech

Three Vietnam veterans who were held captive for years in the prison known as the "Hanoi Hilton" revealed Tuesday that their Communist jailers repeatedly cited John Kerry's 1971 Senate testimony branding them as war criminals to justify threatening them with execution and drive down their morale.

"These statements [by Kerry] ... were proof I deserved to be punished," former POW Air Force pilot Jim Warner told United Press International. During every interrogation session, said Warner, his Vietnamese jailers echoed Kerry's charges that he was a war criminal. "The memory of that was still pretty fresh in my mind, and I was extremely uneasy. ... This officer said I committed crimes, that this war was illegal. ... All along they told us they would execute us for our 'crimes.'"

His captors even waved a four-page transcript of Kerry's Senate speech, Warner said, where the Democratic nominee had accused his brother soldiers of raping, torturing and mutilating innocent Vietnamese civilians.

The ex-POW pilot said also that audio from Kerry's speech was regularly played on Radio Hanoi and piped into the prison camp.

But what particularly incensed him was efforts by Kerry and Jane Fonda to use his parents for propaganda purposes - by persuading them to appear at the Fonda-sponsored Winter Soldier Investigation in 1971.

"His sisters had told him that Fonda and Kerry were involved in getting his parents to appear," UPI said.

"The [North Vietnamese guards] were always talking about that [anti-war demonstrations], and they picked right up on Kerry's throw-away line, 'Don't be the last man to die in a lost cause,'" ex-POW Kenneth Cordier told UPI. Cordier, an Air Force pilot who spent 2,284 days as a prisoner, said his jailers "repeated [Kerry's quote] incessantly."

He also remembers his captors using photographs of the protest march where Kerry famously threw his war medals over the White House fence.

"They kept talking about the Vietnam Veterans Against the War [Kerry's group]," recalls a third ex-POW.

Navy pilot Paul Galanti told UPI that his Hanoi Hilton jailers would cite Kerry as a shining example of someone who had seen the light and had "crossed over to the people's" side.

I do not trust someone that would serve on the field of battle then return to slander the activities of those that he served with. Regardless of where Bush was in 71. I cannot accept your statement that Kerry was trying to make this country better. That is the standard tripe form his campaign.

John Forbes Kerry betrayed his fellow soldiers, claimed that he committed war crimes under orders from his government or superiors, yet when pressed about the issues to day, he refuse to speak of it, but is more that happy to bandy his metals about. Get a clue this snake is a political opportunist.

Before you go off say that there were war crimes committed in Vietnam. Aside for My Lai show me the facts on soldiers investigated or charged with War crimes in Vietnam.

I suggest you really look at Mr. Kerry's Record outside the DNC looking glass.

Just what we need in the White House, an old lying twerp.

I appreciate your Dad's service in Viet Nam and he is entitled to his own thoughts on Kerry. But for me, I don't want Kerry making decision on Foreign or National policies. The guy is 100% a politician from the get-go.

Granted, people mature, but in Kerry's case he wanted to be JFK when he was 21 and still has the same ambition, regardless of how he accomplishes his goal.

My Dad's a Vietnam vet, and is behind Kerry 100%. Even if this stuff is true and he was a young lying twerp, he was still committed to making his country a better place. Maybe he was misguided (ever know a 21-yr-old who wasn't?) but he was trying to make a difference.

What was Georgie up to in '71?

What does that show about who is more committed to the safety of fellow Americans?

Let's peruse your bravo-sierra statements, just for a moment. First, if he's a "young lying twerp" then Kerry committed perjury in congressional testimony. Perjuring oneself in front of congress cannot be validly interpreted as trying to make "his country a better place". It is criminal - and should be a disqualifying factor for any federal office.

Second, if he wasn't lying, then he committed crimes under the UCMJ for not reporting direct knowledge of the alleged atrocities to the military authorities - and please remember that Senator Kerry was still in the Naval Reserves at the time of his testimony.

In either case, Kerry was not "misguided". He committed a crime - under either scenario.

It doesn't matter a whit who your father supports, BTW. One out of 23 of Kerry's fellow swift boat commanders (from the picture that Kerry likes to use in his campaign) is also on board Kerry's bandwagon. IIRC, 16 or 18 of the other commanders have gone on-record against Kerry.

I'm a Gulf war vet. Does that fact mean that my opinion should be weighted more heavily than yours? Of course not! (But, then again, my opinion is based on facts - not empty rhetoric and contempt).

Finally, President Bush was a trained fighter pilot during the Vietnam war. Senator Kerry was in command of a swift boat, before he either perjured himself or was an accomplice to war crimes (take your pick).

But you'd rather shill for the perjurer or UCMJ criminal.

A few months ago I read three books on Vietnam POWs and in one of them, I can't remember which one (probably Survivors by Zalin Grant or A Pow's Story: 2801 Days in Hanoi by Larry Guarino) one of the prisoners mentioned that he was forced under torture or the threat of torture to write a letter to the VVAW. I wonder if those letters were actually sent, and what became of them.
