Bassett Furniture Industries Inc., which came to Macon in the mid-1960s, plans to close by Oct. 1, putting about 185 employees out of work, a company official said Tuesday.
Its Airport Drive manufacturing plant is the company's only facility in Georgia. In April 2003, Bassett closed its Dublin plant, cutting about 300 jobs.
Fewer than 10 employees in Macon will be offered jobs at other plants, said Barry Safrit, vice president and chief financial officer. Other employees will be let go in phases during the next two months.
"People will start leaving as early as two or three weeks, depending on the job they have at the plant," Safrit said. If workers are let go before Oct. 1, they still will be paid through that date, he said.
Employees were notified of the closure Monday, he said.
"They knew business was slow," he said. "But I'm sure many people were surprised. We feel bad about that. We're hoping we can help a majority of them find good jobs elsewhere."

Union workers or not?
President Bush inherited a recession and thru tax cuts and increased trade he has turned things around. If he had tried to protect the jobs of a few in old inefficient industries we might still be in a recession.
The price of quality American made hand crafted wooden furniture has outpaced demand.

I'm not surprised any business in Macon is closing. Even if the economy was at 100% health, C.Jack would manage to screw it up.

Macon is going down the tubes. Ellis has accelerated that process. The current crop of Macon and Bibb County politicians are a joke. The city doesn't know from one week to the next whether it will be able to make payroll.
