I think liberals and conservatives share many ends, but disagree on the means. We both want people to be happy, healthy, fed, sheltered, safe, etc. However, liberals think the ends can and should be achieved at gunpoint, i.e. coercive philanthropy. Conservatives understand coercive philanthropy does not work, and is quite destructive of the ends they seek to achieve. And there's the whole police state thing that's required to make it work.

The liberals want people poor, crime-ridden, welfare-dependent, and resentful. That way, they'll vote Democrat.
