Hey, I agree with you 100 percent. In fact, countersuits HAVE been filed. It's a recent trend that began with the US Forestry service filing suit against the Sierra Club for litigating so much they caused conditions that led to devestating wildfires. The government is new at this, but at least trying.
You also pointed out the problem with your own solution: "tie them up in court". Things stay tied up in court for YEARS, preventing implimentation for YEARS. While people whine that the evil, Soviet-like gubmint of GW Bush isn't doing anything it should be doing.
I guess tying them up in court would be used as a tactic to get them to back off. There really are ways where organizations like the sierra club and the government can work together. Both groups really need to pick what is important and negotiate to do what is both right and what would benefit society.
Cutting away old growth forests is an example of both preserving newer forests and being able to create an economy for lumber. Both groups win.
Unfortunately, the SC tied it up in court, nothing got done and in the process we lost millions of acres of great forest that can never be replaced.
The only part that sucked was Babs house not burning to the ground with her in it.
