College restricts course section to minorities
Washington Times ^ | 8/03/04 | Valerie Richardson

DENVER -- Students at the University of Colorado at Boulder can take the popular "School and Society" course on Fridays -- as long as they're not white.
That particular section is reserved for "students of color," according to a course description. It is also open to those of any race who are first-generation college students. Other students can take the course, which is a requirement for education majors, but during a different period.
University officials say the restricted class offers minority students "a much safer and open environment" in which to discuss issues of race, gender and class. But some students say the course represents a disturbing throwback to the days of "separate but equal" education.
"We've seen this before, and it was called Brown v. Board of Education," said senior Brad Jones, referring to the 1954 Supreme Court ruling that banned segregation in public schools.
"Unfortunately, this is the way CU has consistently acted and thought about race. Their approach seems to be that diversity should be recognized and celebrated, but also that minority students can't compete with other students," Mr. Jones said.
Robert Corry, a Denver-based lawyer representing three CU students, has threatened to take the matter to federal court unless the race restriction is lifted. In a letter to university Vice President Charles Sweet, he accused the state school of violating the constitution's Equal Protection Clause by discriminating on the basis of race.
"CU needs a remedial education in civil rights," Mr. Corry said. "This program is indefensible and offensive to minority students. We think as individuals, not members of a race."

You know, I wonder if the same people who were screaming about the racially separate proms a few months ago will get on their soapbox about this. Or about the "minority only " dorms on campus. Or the segregated graduation ceremonies. Double standards are so amusing.

What's the big deal? White kids don't go to classes on Fridays anyway. They all head out to their lake houses, ski lodges, or beach homes for the long weekend.

Sounds like they are denying white students the "diversity experience" by drawing minority students away from the sections open to them. The same thing goes for segregated dorms, etc.

Imagine ANY course - any course, anywhere - that was open to anyone as long as they weren't black.

The world has gone completely crazy.

**Why is THAT? So they can play merry-go-roung with the same dysfunctional beliefs that they may have? I've been in on diversity panels before and sat with blacks students and all it is a worry free zone to trash white people. I used to love 'no offense' and 'we know you're half white but-' and other such disclaimers right before insulting anything and everything white, and not in the nicest of terms. Such a class is a disgusting idea, and not surprising coming from liberals since they are disgusting people. They're hate and loathing of anything white and western european is amazing, about as shock and awe as their smug attitude that minoritites need their own 'safe space' to air their issues.

Apparently there's not enough room in the rainbow Coalition for everyone. Time to take it to the streets, brothers and sisters! We shall overcome...we shall overcome...

I donate to CU one of my kids having gone there. I shall write them today to take me off their list. The interesting thing is they say they only feel safe if all the whites are gone. Imagine white kids saying they wanted an all white class to "feel safe". I haven't noticed al sharpton or jessee jackson or any black person who wants to spout hate at whites feeling unsafe. Since they feel entitled to say whites are scary, can I now say I think blacks are scary and whites ought to have white only gatherings so we can feel safe. I think not.

Yeah, I never thought of that! I need a "safe place" so I can be bigoted. But I am too scared and don't feel safe enough to be bigoted against Muslims. Maybe the muslim students who are biotech majors or nuclear engineers should be given a secret members only class and lab to feel safe. Hey I think the Islamist students should have their own damn cyclotron,,they would feel safe only then. Lets give them their own bio lab where they can safely work on biological agents in private with no mean white people around.

I read the entire article. On of the reasons cited for having the special section is that a black kid might be the only one in a class of whites and when racial issues came up the class would turn to him to ask him his perspective. So this section protects a kid from having his peers ask him his opinion about a racial issue. Isn't that why campuses are seeking 'diversity'. So is the answer to give preferential admission and scholarships to minority kids as long as no one puts them on the spot by asking them a question. this is outrageous.

How can they tell you are white?

My grandkids are part Filippino...one is blond, like his dad, and his brother looks Filippino, like his mom. Or do they check your skin colour on a colour chart for political correctness?
