MISSILE FOUND

DANIEL J. SERNOVITZ , Staff Writer 08/05/2004

LANSDALE – The police department set up barricades around its parking lot Wednesday evening and evacuated Borough Hall – where council was scheduled to meet 15 minutes later – after discovering that a missile in the back seat of a car was pointed straight at the building.

Officers from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad determined shortly before 9 p.m. that the missile was inert and posed no risk to the public.

“We had a gentleman pull into the parking lot in a Buick LeSabre‚ and in the back of his car is what appears to be an explosive ordinance‚ a missile‚” Police Chief Joseph McGuriman said. “Under the circumstances‚ in this day and age‚ you‚ have to take things like this seriously.”

Police evacuated Borough Hall shortly before Borough Council’s 8 p.m. meeting – interrupting two separate council committee meetings being held at the time – after the device arrived in the back seat of the LeSabre‚ which was driven into the combined parking lot of Borough Hall and the Police Department by Lansdale resident Mark Shotwell.

Shotwell‚ who was not taken into custody or suspected of wrongdoing in the event‚ was driving south on the Pennsylvania Turnpike earlier in the evening when he pulled over for a moment’s rest and found the object.

“I was traveling back from Wilkes Barre and I pulled over to the side of the road to take a leak‚” Shotwell said. “I didn’t realize it was real until I got it here.”

Shotwell said he found the device‚ which he initially thought was just a toy‚ leaning up against a trash can on the turnpike‚ not far from the Allentown exit.

He drove the remaining 45 minutes back home and showed the item to his father‚ a retired officer with the United States Air Force.

Shotwell said his father told him what he had and advised him to report the item directly to the police department.

“I was a little shaky‚” he said. “I was handling the thing‚ playing with it like a toy.”

The object weighed about 5 pounds and was about 2 feet long. The object resembled a surface-to-air missile.

The police department immediately notified the county’s bomb squad and also called for assistance from the Fairmount Fire Company. The streets surrounding Borough Hall were blocked off and onlookers were kept about two blocks from the scene.

The bomb squad arrived at the scene at about 8:30 p.m. and‚ after taking X-rays of the device‚ determined it was not live.

McGuriman said the U.S. Department of Defense is scheduled to pick up the item on Thursday to investigate.

“The Sheriff’s Department has informed us that the Department of Defense will come by tomorrow to pick it up‚” McGuriman said on Wednesday. “They’re going to identify the object‚ what it is and where it came from.”

Borough Council relocated its meeting to the Lansdale Public Library.

Two Terror Suspects Are Arrested in Albany, New York, CBS Says
Aug. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Two men were arrested early today during a raid on a mosque in Albany, New York, on suspicions that they were planning to buy shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles, CBS News reported on its Web site.

U.S. agents and police officers arrested Yassim Muhhidin Aref, who is imam of the Majid Al Salam mosque, and Mohammed Mosharref Hoosain, founder of the mosque, CBS said. The men are suspected of having ties to the Iraqi terrorist group Ansar al Islam, CBS said.

The arrests may have been ordered because one of the men bought an airplane ticket, CBS said. The men allegedly sought help from a confidential informant and were seeking funds to buy the shoulder-launched missiles, CBS said.
