Exclusive: Nancy Reagan Strongly Endorses George Bush

In a statement made Monday to NewsMax.com, Nancy Reagan said she was strongly endorsing President Bush's re-election and rejected a published Internet report that she was not backing his re-election.

Joanne Drake, the chief of staff for former President Ronald Reagan’s office in Los Angeles, said in a statement on behalf of the former first lady, “Mrs. Reagan supports President Bush’s re-election 150 percent.” Published reports have suggested that Mrs. Reagan was unhappy with President Bush for his opposition to taxpayer-funded stem cell research that kills human embryos, which Mrs. Reagan has supported after her husband’s long bout with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mrs. Reagan’s son Ron spoke last week at the Democratic National Convention. He indicated that his mother supported his speech and that she was unhappy with the Bush administration for its stand on embryonic stem cell research.

Ron Reagan gave an implicit endorsement to the Kerry-Edwards ticket, which supports taxpayer funding of that type of research, when he told his national audience, “Whatever else you do come Nov. 2, I urge you, please, cast a vote for embryonic stem cell research.”

Drake, however, noted in her statement on behalf of Mrs. Reagan, “I think everyone would understand that while she may not agree with the president on every issue, this campaign is more than just one issue – it’s about leadership, and she believes that President Bush is the right man for the job.”

Mrs. Reagan’s statement came on the heels of a report published Friday on the Web site capitolhillblue.com.

That story, headlined "Nancy Reagan to Bush: 'We Don't Support Your Re-Election,'" quoted a “spokesman” for Mrs. Reagan as telling the site, "Mrs. Reagan does not support President Bush’s re-election and neither do most members of the President’s family."

Drake also denied the Web site’s claim that Mrs. Reagan told Republican leaders she wanted nothing to do with the party or President Bush, or that she "went ballistic" when she learned the Bush campaign was test marketing ads that used Reagan’s photos and speeches in an effort to show he supported Bush and his re-election.

Capitolhillblue.com also claimed that Mrs. Reagan called Republican Party chief Ed Gillespie to demand the ads be destroyed.

“The quote that appeared in Capitol Hill Blue is incorrect,” Drake said on behalf of Mrs. Reagan. “Further, I do not know where the information came from [indicating that] the former first lady went ballistic when she read the Bush campaign was test marketing new ads. She did not speak to Ed Gillespie on the telephone and demand the ads be destroyed ...”

By endorsing President Bush’s re-election, Mrs. Reagan joins President Reagan’ elder son, Michael, who has already announced his strong support for the president's re-election. Michael will be speaking at the GOP convention in New York.

The president with Nancy Reagan.

I wish Nancy would speak at the GOP convention and tell W to go "win one for the Gipper". That would bring the house down, wouldn't it?

***Give me one instance in the long life of Nancy reagan that would
mark her a Conservative. Marrying Ronald Reagan doesn't count.***

Actually she was a member of the Republican party before Ronald Reagan when they met he was a demoncrat.

Being a Rebublican makes one a conservative? Do you need a list
of contradictions to that statement.?

I agree but my point was that a lot of people were sugesting that Nancy Reagan was neither a Republican or Conservative and this is untrue she was a member of the Republican Party before Ronald Reagan was that was my point.

Excuse me, but as Veterans and as Americans, we have all supported her in times of trouble. Not only during President Reagans illness mind you, but during the tough years when she was ridiculed for every minor thing she did. Even if she hiccuped.

The fact that her son has publicly supported the Democratic nominee is crucial right now. This is an extremely close election. Then to add to that is a rag out of DC stating she is opposing our President. There is no time MORE crucial than now for her to be VISABLE.

Yes, she does owe it to the party of "Reagan". We have been loyal and faithful to her all these years. We have stood by her and President Reagan, and if the Presidents funeral wasn't obvious I don't know what more could have been.

Our President needs her now. There is an aura, a hint that perhaps the Reagans don't support President Bush. She needs to show in a VERY TANGIBLE way, that this isn't true.

The ONLY thing she has done is to PUBLICLY OPPOSE President Bush, by showing up to speak out FOR stem cell research.

She has been out in PUBLIC for the USS Ronald Reagan. So yes, I think she could show up at the REPUBLICAN CONVENTION to ENDORSE President Bush.

AND YES, She owes it to us!

One last comment, not everyone reads NewsMax. But a lot of people saw their son, Ron Reagan at the Dems convention.

Which is why it is imperative that President Reagans wife be at his parties convention endorseing his parties nominee!

Nowhere did I say Nancy was not a Republican, I just said I have no indication she has ever appeared a conservative.

I have been on this board for years but I have never said I was a Republican though I usually vote that way.

If Sam Nunn were running against GWB instead of kerry, I would have a decision to make.

There have been times I was worried Jesse Helms was moving to far to the left.

I would love to see her there. However, I do not think she "owes" anybody anything. I will be surprised if there is not tribute paid to President Reagan at the convention. I will not be enraged if Mrs. Reagan doesn't show up, one way or another. At 82 years old, and all she has been through, I am more worried about her. I don't think this election hinges on the former first lady.

Get this through your thick skull. Nancy Reagan owes nothing to anyone. She paid her dues for 40 years in the political arenda and the campaign trenches standing by and supporting her husband through good times and bad times. And Nancy Reagan isn't anymore responsible for the politics of her liberal son, her liberal daughter or her conservative stepson, then this FReeper is for the ravings of a few ungrateful and grouchy FReepers like you.

Nancy Reagan is a "Class Act".

Ronald Reagan chose VERY wisely....(something you can't do with your children).

You're welcome to your opinion, some of us can have ours. She could have asked her SON to keep quiet, obviously she didn't and he spoke out at the Dems convention.

Nuff said.

Hopefully she will step forward and be present at the Republican convention.

We have been, in actions and deeds, not just words, strong supporters of the Reagans. I hope she will step forward in this "critical" time for our country. We have young men and women dying in our military. It is imperative that all able bodied conservatives step forward to help President Bush be re-elected.

So I don't need you to tell me to get anything through "my" thick skull.

I think President Reagans name needs to be represented in a big way after it was used at the Democratic Convention the way it was. I realize Michael will be there, but Nancy is in good health and she does show up at public functions. She wouldn't even have to speak. Or if she was to speak at all, it could be a quick tribute to President Reagan, and a quick "I know Ronnie would support, and I support President Bush". Then she's out of there.

She just attended a very "LONG" gala affair for the USS Ronald Reagan. It lasted for HOURS. She is definitely up for this healthwise, and it is extremely important after all the publicity over their son being at the Dems convention. It "was" damaging to President Bush to have President Reagans son at the Dems convention supporting John Kerry, trust me!

President Reagan loved the troops, as did Nancy,.. the re-election of President Bush is vital for our troops.
