Exclusive: Nancy Reagan Strongly Endorses George Bush

In a statement made Monday to NewsMax.com, Nancy Reagan said she was strongly endorsing President Bush's re-election and rejected a published Internet report that she was not backing his re-election.

Joanne Drake, the chief of staff for former President Ronald Reagan’s office in Los Angeles, said in a statement on behalf of the former first lady, “Mrs. Reagan supports President Bush’s re-election 150 percent.” Published reports have suggested that Mrs. Reagan was unhappy with President Bush for his opposition to taxpayer-funded stem cell research that kills human embryos, which Mrs. Reagan has supported after her husband’s long bout with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mrs. Reagan’s son Ron spoke last week at the Democratic National Convention. He indicated that his mother supported his speech and that she was unhappy with the Bush administration for its stand on embryonic stem cell research.

Ron Reagan gave an implicit endorsement to the Kerry-Edwards ticket, which supports taxpayer funding of that type of research, when he told his national audience, “Whatever else you do come Nov. 2, I urge you, please, cast a vote for embryonic stem cell research.”

Drake, however, noted in her statement on behalf of Mrs. Reagan, “I think everyone would understand that while she may not agree with the president on every issue, this campaign is more than just one issue – it’s about leadership, and she believes that President Bush is the right man for the job.”

Mrs. Reagan’s statement came on the heels of a report published Friday on the Web site capitolhillblue.com.

That story, headlined "Nancy Reagan to Bush: 'We Don't Support Your Re-Election,'" quoted a “spokesman” for Mrs. Reagan as telling the site, "Mrs. Reagan does not support President Bush’s re-election and neither do most members of the President’s family."

Drake also denied the Web site’s claim that Mrs. Reagan told Republican leaders she wanted nothing to do with the party or President Bush, or that she "went ballistic" when she learned the Bush campaign was test marketing ads that used Reagan’s photos and speeches in an effort to show he supported Bush and his re-election.

Capitolhillblue.com also claimed that Mrs. Reagan called Republican Party chief Ed Gillespie to demand the ads be destroyed.

“The quote that appeared in Capitol Hill Blue is incorrect,” Drake said on behalf of Mrs. Reagan. “Further, I do not know where the information came from [indicating that] the former first lady went ballistic when she read the Bush campaign was test marketing new ads. She did not speak to Ed Gillespie on the telephone and demand the ads be destroyed ...”

By endorsing President Bush’s re-election, Mrs. Reagan joins President Reagan’ elder son, Michael, who has already announced his strong support for the president's re-election. Michael will be speaking at the GOP convention in New York.

The president with Nancy Reagan.

Nancy Reagan is a class act and I have trouble believing she'd ever let one issue influence her support for President Bush and the GOP.

This shows my feelings are correct.

Thank you Nancy!

You're kidding, right? You're a humorous FReeper, you are.

Didn't you know, that being on the Internet means never having to apologize?

what makes you think she DIDN'T tell "major media" ? Do you suppose "major media" would run a Pro-Bush endorsement by Nancy Reagen on the front page or any page for that matter? a FOX endorsement would probably be considered just as meaningless as Newsmax.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!
dwilli sez, "Do you really think that litle Ron went to the DNC without his Mother's knowlege?
"HAHAHA. thats one of the stupidest things i've ever read here on FR!!! whats she gonna do? take away his TV time? No snack tonight after dinner?
What Lil' Ronnie does or says has as much to do with Nancys views, as what you say on FR reflects on your own mothers views.

I wonder how much play this will get on the alphabet networks (hint: very little.)

"Very little" is optimistic. I say NONE.

I told them straight out, your a lib, I'm a conservative, it will never work.

I agree, add "Born-Again Christian to the mix and that's probably a big reason why I am still single

Although I would rather be single than married to a flaming liberal

Note CHB edited the story to change it's sources...

“Mrs. Reagan will not campaign for President Bush’s re-election and neither will most members of the President’s family,” says a source close to the former First Lady.

As opposed to:

“Mrs. Reagan does not support President Bush’s re-election and neither to most members of the President’s family,” says a spokesman for the former First Lady.

He knows he couldn't provide a name that could be easily referenced so he changed it. He is just unbelievable.

Interesting find Bogey.
I find it increasingly difficult to wrap around my brain the fact that a grown man, who just buried his father, paid and listened to glowing tributes about his father-- is in bed with his father's enemies. How can Reagan Jr. play along with those liberals that literally hate his father? I just don't get it.

I realize that Ron Jr. didn't actually give glowing remarks--most of his were petty things about ear lobes--but he did sit through the entire process acknowledging how great his father had been. What kind of man then goes and sits with folks that have despised that same man? Is that not weird? unbalanced?

Yea, even though I caught the "spokesman" change I completely overlooked the "campaign" vs "support" changed.

Doug Thompson is a sneaky guy.

The junior son of President Reagan is an admitted atheist. He therefore believes in man, not in God, so unlike his father.
And with that faith in man, he will unfortunately graze in the meadow with goats and donkeys, traipsing like an odd jack___ of words, leaving his manure in the fields and dancing away with more stench on his heels to the delight of the bitter hearted.

His actions must be heartbreaking for some members of his family.
