According to flight itineraries, Ahmed traveled from Johannesburg through Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to London and on to Mexico City. Authorities said she later told them she was smuggled into the United States from Mexico by crossing the Rio Grande.
Kyle Welch, Ahmed's court-appointed attorney, said his client is not charged with any terrorist activity and does not have a criminal record. She was denied bond on Tuesday.
Rep. Solomon Ortiz, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness, said "very credible" people told him Ahmed has traveled within the United States more than 250 times.
The Associated Press reported last week that authorities believed crime syndicates operating within the South African government were believed to be selling illegal passports for as little as $77 apiece.

4. High Condition (Orange). A High Condition is declared when there is a high risk of terrorist attacks. In addition to the Protective Measures taken in the previous Threat Conditions, Federal departments and agencies should consider the following general measures in addition to the agency-specific Protective Measures that they will develop and implement:
Most folks wouldn't know a proper bomb if it bit them on the butt. I've seen people go totally wonky before 9/11 on what they thought was a bomb and turned out to be someone's forgotten lunchbag. I've even seen containers of truck registration papers mistaken for bombs (and summarily "detonated" by police bomb disposal units).
Do I think folks should be notified of changes in our threat situation? Of course. But I think this idiocy of telling them to "go on as if everything's fine" is sheer lunacy and only engenders a sense of learned helplessness that isn't doing anyone any favors.
I personally would like to see a return of the Civil Defense as we had in World War II. At least that gave people a sense that they had a role in their own destiny...and that's a far cry from the nonsense that's going on now.

but there are two orange levels for NY. "low orange" and "high orange". we've been at low orange foe a while now - when I see the truck stop and searches being done at the bridges and tunnels - that's high orange, I suspect I will start seeing that Monday.
