Kerry's Sister: Teenage Alexandra Influenced Gulf War Vote

In a 1996 interview with The Boston Phoenix, Peggy Kerry admitted, "Alexandra's advice during a 1990 Christmas dinner influenced the senator's decision to vote against a Gulf War resolution" - according to a Boston Globe report that same year.

The anecdote is reminiscent of President Jimmy Carter's admission during a 1980 debate with then-challenger Ronald Reagan that he consulted his then-13-year-old daughter Amy on nuclear proliferation issues.

Carter's admission fueled his reputation for incompetence on foreign policy issues and helped cause his defeat.

Alexandra Thorne Kerry was just 16 years old when she persuaded her father to vote against the first Gulf War.

My middle child at age 14 or so, hard to remember at this point, was invited to summer camp at Johns Hopkins University. He's grown now, incredibly brilliant, and pretty modest to boot. Hey, my eldest daughter went to the Hopkins thing for gifted and talented! We might have met in the carpool line. She loved that program and it has influenced her all her life. She is brilliant, writes like an angel, is accomplished and now stays at home with three children, has a variety of things she does and loves it. One day she will be back in the marketplace but for now her children are privileged to have her home.

Wow. I know my guy is amazing. What is startling about him, and your daughter is the concept of childraising. He wants 12 kids, homeschooled with a stay-at-home wife. His girlfriend is Asian, brilliant, in the defense field, and agrees wholeheartedly.

They believe, and I guess your daughter is indicative of the future, that they have a responsibility to bring responsible, educated people into the world who, most importantly, can THINK for themselves.

Let's see, Saddam HAD invaded another country, their was international support (including France) for the war in 1991, and Kerry still voted against it. Makes things a little clearer now.

There is a maturing that goes on in the brain at about age 20. At age 14 - 18, girls are not thinking clearly. Boys are bad, too. Formerly good kids turn into hormone raging maniacs. I loved my kids when they were teens, but no way I would ask them about national affairs and war if I were in a position of leadership. It is the adult's job to instruct the child, not the other way around!
