Sources: Al Qaeda Plotting to Attack New York City Corporations

N E W Y O R K, July 31, 2004? ABC News has learned that federal and New York City officials have received credible intelligence that al Qaeda has been plotting to carry out suicide attacks on corporations based in the city. |

| Sources at several law enforcement agencies tell ABC News that an "overseas source" has provided the information about the threat to New York and that it is more significant than the usual "chatter" intercepted from likely terrorists that has prompted warnings in the past. Officials from dozens of local and federal agencies met into the night Friday and again this morning. "Intelligence reporting indicates that al Qaeda continues to target for attack commercial and financial institutions, as well as international organizations, inside the United States," the New York City Police Department said in a statement released today on the "ongoing al Qaeda threat." "The NYPD recommends that corporate and institutional security directors review their protection of HVAC systems, parking installations, and security in general," the statement added. "The alert level for New York City remains unchanged at 'orange' or 'high.'" Border Worries Intelligence sources say al Qaeda plans to move non-Arab terrorists across the border with Mexico. Authorities already have in custody a woman of Pakistani-origin arrested after crossing into Texas. She carried a South African passport with several of the pages torn out, $7,000 in cash and an airplane ticket to New York. New York is already on heightened alert for the Republican National Convention, which meets at Madison Square Garden in a month and will bring scores of high government officials to town. The sources tell ABC News that Wall Street firms may be among the targeted U.S. corporations based in New York City. Which corporations or how many may be targeted has not been revealed. Suicide Truck Bombings Particularly disturbing to authorities were the intelligence reports that the attack may involve one or more suicide truck bombings, a tactic never seen in the United States, but one widely used by terrorists elsewhere. "I think they want to try and shake our psyche again," says Jerry Hauer, an ABC News consultant and former director of New York City's Office of Emergency Management. "And I think the easy types of attacks right now are car bombs, truck bombs." Law enforcement officials acknowledge such bombs are extremely difficult to prevent. As to the timing of any planned attack, sources say it could take place between now and Election Day in November. As the government tries to verify the reports of the threat, there are no plans to raise the national threat level, a senior Bush administration official tells ABC News. There were threads about two weeks ago. He took some WH briefings in the earlier part of this year and then refused them when the recent AQ threat was issued. He said it was because "why would I want to get briefings from the same CIA that led us into war incorrectly" or words to that effect.

My opinion is that he and his minions are getting hefty payoffs. The Mexicans do not let the Guatemalans in because they have no money. The Arabs are getting into Mexico because of the mucho deniro.
they may say NYC is at orange, but I do not see the aggressive checkpoints at the bridges and tunnels as I have in the past. Maybe after this story, things will be different on Monday.
A lot will depend on how Bush responds-- if he offers more "TROP" bull, then we could have a situation like Spain; if we immediately waste a lot of goat humpers, its a landslide.

I'm not so sure. The president is running on the theme that America is safer under his command, if there is a major attack before election day he's going to have a hard time defending himself from the media onslaught. If would help of course if we could get Bin Laden before November.
It an outrage that innocent people will have to die.
I used to think that but there are enough nuts out there that are likely to think that Bush allowed the attack to succeed for political purposes... ya know, the Michael Moore/Al Gore crowd.

I mean Joe Citizen isn't going to shoot a truckdriver because he thinks the guy is a terrorist and risk life in jail or execution for a "hate crime". Joe Citizen won't know if the guy is good or evil until it is too late to act most likely, at least in the possible threat scenarios described in this warning.
Realize that one good guy with a gun could make the difference in a hijack type of situation or countering a terrorist who has a gun.
Suicide truck bombers though would be another story.

I can paint a picture that will show how a major attack causes Bush to lose.
"X" happens and Kerry begins an immediate, if we were concetrating on Al Queda we could have stopped this but we were lied to and dragged to Iraq.
"What we need is a wall a la Israel along the Mexican border"
The World Court would rule that we should tear it down, just like Israel. Wonder what the dumocraps would say then...."Yet again we've alienated the international community".
Rode the ferry with a trader from the floor who described to me how a Pakastani with a backpack got to the floor of the Exchange and when security asked him how he got there and what he was doing there he said that he didn't know.
Saw an Arab riding the ferry and getting off and then getting back on again and taking it the other way.
This person was riding it for the point of riding it and observing operating procedure.
What I am describing here could easily have been trial runs by the enemy in at least two of the above cases, possibly.
At best they were mere lapses in security.
