Believe' tour off to a bumpy start(Kerry's 21-state trip gets a mixed reception during its 1st day)

The Democratic presidential ticket of John Kerry and John Edwards worked Friday to spread the energy, beginning a national bus tour hours after the Boston convention.

Kerry, whose convention speech emphasized national security and foreign policy, said in an interview with The Associated Press that he would put Osama bin Laden on trial in U.S. courts.

That would ensure the "fastest, surest route" to a murder conviction if the terrorist mastermind is captured while he is president, Kerry said.

"I want him tried for murder in New York City, and in Virginia and in Pennsylvania," where planes hijacked by al-Qaida operatives crashed Sept. 11, 2001, he said.

His "Believe in America" road tour got off to a bumpy start Friday.

A sparse crowd showed up at a morning rally in Boston to begin the 21-state tour. On board were the Kerry family, the Edwards family and an entourage.

Kerry admitted he was dragging. "I am longing to have my head hit a pillow," he said.

Highways were blocked from Boston to Scranton as the campaign's 10 buses and support vehicles lumbered westward.

In Newburg, N.Y., they made an unscheduled stop to celebrate John and Elizabeth Edwards' 27th anniversary.

The couple observed their anniversary tradition of a meal at Wendy's, a nod to their early married days when it was all they could afford.

Kerry joined them inside and spied a table of Marines. But when he struck up a conversation, the Marines answered tersely and expressed irritation.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here to shake our hands," said one, who did not give his name.

Later, at a stop in Harrisburg, Pa., Edwards turned his sights on Bush, who had criticized Kerry. "Today, the president went out and spoke for the first time since John spoke (at the convention), and here we go again," Edwards said. "The same old thing, relentless negative attacks on John Kerry.

"They are trying to take this campaign for the highest office in the land down the lowest possible road."

I know that if you start poking your finger at a Marine, you are gonna come away without that finger, IF YOU ARE LUCKY!

If I'm running for office, any office, the last thing I'm going to do is point my finger in someone's chest. You just don't do things like that.

You can tell that Marine is PO'ed too. Look at those eyes.

a normal person would have said "Boy, I'm tired", instead of something that sounded like it came out of either a cheesy romance novel, or a low-budget porn video.

You gotta love these Marines. They were respectful but they weren't buying what John Kerry, antiwar whackjob, was selling. Its times like these when I wish the MArine recruiter was in that day.

the strategy unfolds. every time the president opens his mouth offering the mildest of reservations regarding the background and record of mr. kerry, they squeal like little girls. [no offense to little girls intended] I'm sure kerry will be all over the news reminding us that he called for civility, a rejection of attack politics, etc., but people that weren't drunk or stoned that night will remember that his call for moderation came after 55 minutes of rabidly ripping and chewing into GWB's flesh.

phony is as phony does, I suppose.

More details

http://www.nypost.com/news/nationalnews/25935.htm

July 31, 2004 -- SCRANTON, Pa. — John Kerry's heavily hyped cross-country bus tour stumbled out of the blocks yesterday, as a group of Marines publicly dissed the Vietnam War hero in the middle of a crowded restaurant.

Kerry was treating running mate Sen. John Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, to a Wendy's lunch in Newburgh, N.Y., for their 27th wedding anniversary — an Edwards family tradition — when the candidate approached four Marines and asked them questions.

The Marines — two in uniform and two off-duty — were polite but curt while chatting with Kerry, answering most of his questions with a "yes, sir" or "no, sir."

But they turned downright nasty after the Massachusetts senator thanked them "for their service" and left.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands," one Marine said, adding, "I'm 100 percent against [him]."

A sergeant with 10 years of service under his belt said, "I speak for all of us. We think that we are doing the right thing in Iraq," before saying he is to be deployed there in a few weeks and is "eager" to go and serve.

The Marines — all of whom serve at nearby Stewart Air Force Base — wouldn't give their names.

You are correct.

Not thinking early in the AM.

What I wanted to make clear was that as a senator, he was owed courtesy, regardless of how big a dork he is. A member of the armed services who acts in a disrespectful manner toward a senator, congressman, or other civilian official is going to cause himself trouble he doesn't need.

I guess what I am trying to put across is that the military is controlled by the civilian government, they are under civilian control. Rank wasn't the term I should have used.

All that being said, I know I would have wanted to deck that finger pointing jerk too!

Absolutely agree! Lots of things these cheap frauds do make me mad, but this just makes my blood boil. What can you expect from this Mark Geragos wannabe but an attempt to manipulate the tiny little minds of those they consider beneath them.

Locally, we refer to it as the Houston Comical. It's the only major newspaper in town so they have a captured audience for their blatant liberal views and coupons.

A couple of years ago they accidentally posted a strategy memo on their website on how to "control" reporting on what we now call "The Streetcar Named Disaster" (light rail).

Nevermind - I believe this helped quite a bit. Good for the marine - glad he was polite yet crisp.

In Newburg, N.Y., they made an unscheduled stop to celebrate John and Elizabeth Edwards' 27th anniversary.

First of all, it's NEWBURGH, and second of all it wasn't an "unscheduled stop".

It was reported in the local fish rag ALL week long that Edwards was going to stop in Newburgh on Friday, they just weren't sure WHERE.

What a bunch of pansy ass liars.

As a Senator, Kerry outranks the Marine.

Are you sure about this? I would think that a senator, being a civilian, is not in the Marine's chain of command.
