Concerns about border security were highlighted on July 19, when officials at McAllen-Miller International Airport in southern Texas arrested a woman suspected of having ties to al Qaeda.
Farida Goolam Mohamed, who had an airplane ticket to New York, was stopped when a Border Patrol agent noticed several pages of her South African passport had been removed. Officials also said her clothing was dirty and muddy, suggesting she might have recently crossed the nearby Rio Grande, the river separating Mexico and Texas.
The arrest is one reason why U.S. officials are increasingly concerned al Qaeda may try to smuggle terrorists into the United States from Mexico.
"Al Qaeda has recognized that one of our vulnerabilities is our [in]ability to completely seal and control access through Mexico," said ABC News consultant Jerry Hauer, former director of New York City's Office of Emergency Management.
Border Crossings Are Vulnerable, Experts Say
The 2,000-mile-long border with Mexico is virtually impossible to defend, officials said. And sources tell ABC News there is new intelligence that al Qaeda wants to smuggle terrorists across it.
It's well known that many Central Americans have been illegally coming across the U.S.-Mexican border. Now the U.S. government estimates that a quarter-million illegal aliens not only from Central America, but also Africa and the Middle East have been coming across the southern border each year.
Last month, customs officers at Miami's airport arrested an Egyptian national on charges of smuggling people from the Middle East through Central America into Mexico, and then into the United States.
LOL.......Too many 'officials' not worried at all about *who* is crossing our borders.

Agree ... these terrorist scumbags have been infiltrating our southern border (perhaps from Canada as well) for months ... this is news? Give me a break ...
Nice post. We appreciate your hard work.
Thanks for this post. The borders have been waaay outta control for years. Heck..remember all the bad mouthing on this site when Pat B was saying we needed to close em up tight? Remember the guffawing some of us had to take by saying we thought he was right?
I may not agree with Pat on alot of things..but on immigration and borders..he had it nailed.
I truly believe that if this President OR Kerry would have the guts to close the borders down for a few years..and ARREST AND DETAIN those that are here in terrorist cells..they would be ushered into the White House by a landslide.
Why? Because ALL Americans know deep down that this is the gorilla in the room. Nobody wants to say it..but if it ever gets said..there will be rewarding by votes. This is an issue that would bypass race..gender..party..etc.
Just my O.
No Shiite Sherlock....
"Well, duh!"
You KNOW it!
If I were AQ, I'd come in from Mexico and Canada. It's a no brainer.
Gee do you think creating yet another department will change how STUPID our security people are for not realizing this? Why have another department with MORE stupid people? Maybe it's time to lay off some of the dimmer bulbs working for our security.
Your 2 cents is worth a MILLION DOLLARS!
DOH!!! Ya Think????????
Wow! It only took close to 3 YEARS for them to figure that out!
As I recall the Buchaneers were wanting to build a wall across the border four years ago before we even imagined that terrorists might attack the U.S.
As I recall they were frightened of choking on a meatball because the 911 dispatcher was bilingual.
But it's election time again and they still haven't gotten over President Bush winning the nomination. So they think they can undermine his support in key states by inflaming conservatives over the immigration issue. Eventually they always get around to blaming President Bush for illegal immigration and pouting that they aren't going to vote.
This report is GWB's weakness. An open border spells disaster and yet he won't implement tougher security measures. I live in Texas and will vote for W, but his enforcement of our borders SUCK!
Yep, they called it. Premonition?
"The 2,000-mile-long border with Mexico is virtually impossible to defend, officials said."
With statememnts like this, I'm feeling more secure all the time. Why don't we just translate it into Spanish and post it on signs facing Mexico every hundred yards or so, just in case there's still someone that hasn't gotten the message?
Could enter???? Haven't some already done just that?
So I take it that you're fine with terrorists coming in?
No --- it must be bilingual what is posted on those signs --- Spanish and Arabic --- apparently it's not just millions of Mexicans coming so easily over the borders -- it's terrorists too.
Psilocybin-containing mushrooms are easily mistakable for non-psychoactive, inedible, or poisonous mushrooms in the wild, which can make them difficult and hazardous to identify. Hallucinogenic mushrooms, like other species, often grow in piles of manure.
If you're not ingesting too much of the psychoactive type you may be suffering from accumulated toxicity from the bogus kind. It is apparent that you've more than your fair share of the medium both types grow in.
